2 STATES GIVE LAND FOB NEW NATIONAL PARK North Carolina and Tennessee to Turn Over First 150,000 Acres. B'' >) r u f<t ScirUfinui r AUinnrr KNOXVILLE, Tenn.. Feb. s.—The Great Smoky Mountain National park will become a reality Thursday. when the states of Tennessee and North Carolina will turn over to the interior department at Washington the first 150.000 acres of a park that eventually will comprise 427.000 acres. It will become this country's twenty-second national park, the second east of the Mississippi and the first of any size in the east. The only one at present is Acadia, off the coast of Maine. The Great Smoky park was made possible through a $5,000,000 contribution by the Laura Spellman Rockefeller memorial. The states and citizens of Tennessee and 1 North Carolina together raised a I similar amount. The guiding spirit ! behind the movement was D. C. Chapman, Knoxville banker, who has devoted his time to the project j for the last six years. Outstanding features of this new ; national park, which lies half in j Tennessee and half in North Caro- ! lina, are the variety of the plant j life, the ruggedness of the peaks, ' tho wildness of the country, and the wealth of small animal life. Every form of plant life exists in the park area that may be found on this continent as far north as Hudson Bay. Special Notices DR. H. E.
