ICE CUBES IN POPULAR FAVOR, FIRM REPORTS Crystal Clear Product in Parafine Boxes Now Available. Kate and Queen have been interested spectators during'the past two weeks of the unusual activity in the big coal yard of the Polar Ice & Fuel Company, probably chuckling to themselves that their coal hauling days are over. These pensioners, however, being more than thirty years old, have earned the privileges of a good home and good food. When Kate and Queen first entered service of the Polar company, there was need for only a comparatively small number of teams and wagons. Today the company’s business requires ninety-six horses and a large fleet of motor trucks to handle its coal and ice deliveries. An additional service, recently inaugurated, is ice cube delivery, for which a big demand has been experienced. A truck, specially built for this purpose, has been placed in service. It now is possible to get clear crystal ice cubes, made of frozen distilled water, at any hour of day or night by phone call. These cubes are packed in parafine boxes. Seventy-two cubes are sold for a modest sum. Three years ago, the Polar company started an investigation into merits of many refrigerators marketed as high grade, with most startling results. Many are found with no insulating material other than paper or cardboard. Since then, the Polar company has opened a refrigerator sales room at the norfchs.de plant, 2000 Northwestern avenue. No refrigerators are handled by the Polar company except those having a high tested rating in accordance with specifications supplied by Columbia university. Each year, since its opening, it has been necessary to enlarge the display room to take care of increasing demand for Polar refrigerators.

efficient as to water flow, according to Vem Reed, president. The radiator cores are clogged by an accumulation of grease, scale and particles of rubber hose. Grease grows inside a radiator and has a tendency to pick up lime scale and other impediments which, in time, will close the tubes completely, eventually deteriorating the zinc and making it porous and beyond repair. Proper circulation of an automobile cooling system not only prevents motor ills, but increases life of the motor. The R. and M. system of cleaning radiators, using the R. and M. solution, without removing the radiator from the car, is a guaranteed cure for overheating motors. This solution, developed by the company, is absolutely harmless to the radiator. A complete stock of radiators and cores for every make of automobile is carried.

COLDS CAUSE HEAVYJ.OSSES Cost Business Firms Large Sum in Efficiency. Colds cause a greater loss to Industry than any other one thing, according to A. C. Ostermeyer, of the Ostermeyer Paper Company, 148 Virginia avenue. But because the cold Is a minor disease, the average business man looks on the pay roll loss as a petty Item. Business authorities, Ostermeyer said, are agreed that colds are responsible for more absence and low efficiency among employes than any other condition. Science has determined that 90 per cent of the colds, flu. sore throat and similar diseases enter the body through the mouth. The Burt conical paper drinking cup, strictly sanitary £nd economical, is an effective means of reducing the spread of respiratory diseases. These modern cups are distributed by the Ostermeyer company.

SHIPPERS SAVED MONEY BY USE OF LIFT TRUCKS Use of Skid Platforms by Manufacturers Is Increasing. Shippers throughout the country constantly are on the lookout for methods that effect savings in labor, time and money. One of the latestmethods adopted is shipping of goods on skid platforms hauled by powerful life trucks. “Hundreds of manufacturing concerns now ship all kinds of products on skid platforms from their plant to that of their customers,” said W. Glenn Tipton, head of the Engineering Equipment Company, 19 West South street. “The railroads and other common carriers rapidly are equipping themselves to handle such shipments of freight, and the United States department of commerce has placed its stamp of-approval on the plan and recommends its widespread use. “Great savings will be made for manufacturers, consumers and common carriers when this method becomes accepted generally. One paper company found that two men with lift trucks could load a 50-foot box car with paper on skids in forty-five minutes, whereas formerly it took seven men three hours to do the same job where paper was loaded in regular boxes. “Another claimed that the services of five men had been eliminated by using the skid method of shipping goods. “We recommend the Stuebing Cowan lift trucks and there is no interior hauling need which these trucks can not meet satisfactorily.” In addition to the Stuebing Cowan lift trucks, the firm carries Yale electric industrial trucks, both in lift platforms and Economy electric lifters, a power operated portable elevator.
