DEPORT BOREN DUE TO LOSE E HIGHWAY JOB Leslie Is Believed to Have Told Former Adherent He Is Through. BY DANIEL M. KIDNEY Governor Harry G. Leslie was reported today to be casting about for a successor to Robert Boren Democrat of Fountain City, whose term on the state highway commission expires April 17. When Boren supported the Leslie ouster of former Director John D. Williams and replaced him by the Governor's friend. John J. Brown, it was said that Boren’s reappointificnt to the commission was assured. Later developments, however, are said to have reversed the Governor’s attitude. One report Ims it that he already has told Boren he will not be reappointed. Would Be Second Bhould he be replaced. Boren will be the second Democrat removed from the commission by the Governor. He appointed A. P. Melton. Gary, to succeed George E. Hershman. Crown Point, some months after Hershman's term expired in April of last year Democrats must succeed Democrats. however, for the commisison Is bipartisan and conqiosed of four members. Term of Chairman Albert J. Wedeking, (Rep.) Dale, is the next to expire after Boren. Date of expiration is April 17. 1931. His reappointment at that time may depend much on Brown, if the director retains his present close contact with Governor Leslie. Williams Czaristlc Since tIK ousting of Williams. Wedeking and Jess L. Murden, j Peru, the other Republican commissioner, have assumed somewhat aggressive leadership in the matter of highway department programs. They back this stand on the grounds that one of the criticisms of Williams' regime was that he was "czaristic” and the commission was more or less impotent. But Brown also wants to run the department and a clash of ideas has resulted. Upon taking the directorship. Brown announced he favored keeping down maintenance and using most of the $20,000,000 the department has to spend for “permanent highways," meaning largely concrete paving. Foil to Reques-ts But the commissioners outlined what they termed a six-year maintenance program in which they announced they will take in some ninety-six new roads totaling 1.958 miles and making the state highway system approximately 7,000 miles. This anouncement was designed to prove a foil for delegations coming to the department with requests. A map showing delegations that their road is to be included is displayed, and although the time of taking it over is not specified.

of Eobbitt, Governor Harry a. Leslie and Mrs. Grace Banta Reynolds, state treasurer. Mrs. Reynolds explained the action as one designed to eliminate dormant accounts and put all state money in the larger Institutions where accounts are kept active. Many of these small banks have had from $2,500 to $5,000 of state funds on deposit for years, she said, and the accounts were inactive. In no instance was a bank carrying more than $5,000 eliminated, she asserted. In other smaller institutions, carrying more than $5,000, the

amount was reduced in some instances. In all. between $250,000 and $300,000 will be called in and placed on active accounts for payment of current state bills, Mrs. Reynolds explained. Bobbitt denied there is any political significance in the move and pointed out that institutions where money was withdrawn are managed by both Democrats and Republicans.
