EVIDENCE MAZE FACED BY JURY IN DEATH QUIZ Carousals, Treasure. Still Mixed in Murder or Suicide Probe. By Vnite<l Prm* NEWTON. 11l . Jan 30.—A tale of murder. suiride, hidden treasure, vanishing whisky stills, a rained farrn home and nocturnal carousals was laid before the Jasper county grand jury today after the coroner and state's attorney admitted they didn't know which way to turn in the maze of evidence. The grand jury's task will be to decide whether George Dovel, farmer, was murdered or committed suicide. It must sift a mass of contradictory evidence given by five persons who were in or near the Dovel home the night of Dec. 10, 1929. The principal actors in the rtxral tragedy are Fannie Dovel, redhaired widow of Dovel; Sheriff Sieve McKinney. William Davis, Dovel's farm hand; George Williams and Ray Murphy, described ns neighbors, all of them in or near the house when Dovel was wounded fatally. In addition Dr. J. W. Hutton, who was called to attend Dovel before he died of his wound, Mildred Varvel. 18, who lived with the Dovels, and a mysterious Harry' Johnson, described as an ex-convict, play separate roles. Miss Varvel and Johnson left the Dovel home the day before the shooting and Johnson has not been seen since. Illegal Mate of Alleged Bigamist Says It Was Other Way Round. “She says I ‘soft-soaped’ her—well what she gave me must have been a barrel of soap chips.’’ And that’s the masculine angle of the dual marriage—one illegal—of Mrs. Ruby Simons. 23, of 1703 Roosevelt avenue, who faces a bigamy charge, from her illegal husband, Henry Kelch, 23. of 2210 Wheeler street. Early this week, following her arrest. Today Kelch is giving his side of the matrimonial mixup in the above statement amplified it with: “She deceived me. She didn’t tell me she was married to Orval Simons. I found their wedding license in her trunk after our marriage. “And,” he added, "she sold the wedding ring I gave her for $7.50. I tried to help her. After finding out about her first marriage I tried to help her get a divorce so that could get out of it without any trouble. She went back to live with her first husband.” “I’m through and you can tell

Mrs. Dovei produced a .32-caliber pistol, which she said her husband used to kill himself. Bullets from Dovel’s body fit another pistol which Dr. Hutton produced, saying Mrs. Dovel had given it to him as pay for his medical work. Then Mrs. Dovel changed her story and

WEEK OF DELAY LIKELY BEFORE POWERS' ACTION I Steering Group Is Slated to Speed Preparation of Agenda. BY WILLIAM PHILIP SIMMS Serlpps-Howard Fureirn Editor ! LONDON, Jan. 30.—1 t seems there Is little likelihood the five-power naval conference will get down to brass tacks for another week, but at least the beginning of the end of the delegates’ efforts to compose an agenda at last appears in sight. After all these days of tedious discussion, delegations have not been able to agree on an exact program. So today a steering committee will be named to arrange matters for debate. Up to the present, the agenda still is extremely plastic. It resembles a long list of good things to eat as suggested by various persons from which a specially delegated committee will now proceed to make up the menu. At the moment, opinion differs among delegation spokesmen whether this steering committee is to last throughout the conference or merely get things started. Today’s plenary session which will be public to the extent of admitting the press, will settle this point. Premier Tardieu leaves for Paris today, indicating that the conference will not get down to bedrock until the middle of next week. It now seems certain that once the initial problems, like whether limitation shall be global or by categories are settled, the first real issue to be tackled will be the cruiser-destroyer-submarine limitation as demanded by Americans. From this, other issues like the battleship building holiday and re-

CONFER ON CITY MILK ORDINANCE Law Rewriting May Follow Dismissal of Cases. Whether to rewrite the city milk ordinance or appeal fifteen cases which were dismissed before Municipal Judge Dan V. White last Friday was considered today by city attorneys. White sustained demurrers In fifteen cases charging restaurant owners with “dipping” milk, prohibited under the ordinance. The affidavits were filed several months ago, but a change of venue was taken to White’s court. White declared the affidavits didn't charge specific violation of the ordinance, pointing out that the measure did not clearly define “dipped” milk. Prosecutor Herbert Spencer said
