BANDIT SHOOTS AT AUTO DRIVER DURING HOLDUP^ Fires When Taxi Operator Seeks Aid: Steals Cab and $5. A taxi bandit Monday night fired one shot at a passing motorist to prevent assistance for his victim. Ray Coulson. 2233 Roosevelt avenue, taxi driver, had jumped out of hi* taxi to hail a passing car, while he was being held up on Morris street, near Stout field. Prom inside the taxi the bandit fired a shot through the rear glass. The motorist sped away and the bandit, threatening Coulson with a revolver, drove the cab away, after robbing Coulson of $5. Hole in Glass The cab was found abandoned at Miller and Lee streets with a bullet hole in the rear glass. Police today discounted a claim the bandit made that he was “the Banana Kid. - ’ Descriptions of the bandit using the "Banana Kid" title do not compare with that of the robber of Coulson. No report had been made to police today by a motorist of a bullet striking his car and police believe the . shot fired by the bandit went astray.! Confess Robbery Two men held up Earl Phillips, 26. of 207 West Twenty-ninth street, Omar Baking company driver, in the 200 block on West Twenty-fifth j street late Monday and took S4O. The men, in a car, stopped Phillips’ wagon, asking for “cookies.” then drew guns and held up the driver. Police at Louisville, notified Indianapolis police Monday night they are holding two men alleged to have confessed to a filling station holdup here Jan. 23. The men. Bert Healy and Joseph Cole, alias Joseph Edge, both of Wisconsin, may be returned here for alleged robbery of the Shell filling station at, Madison avenue and Prospect street when $79 was stolen. CRIME AREA OF CITY ISOLATED BY EXPERT Large Per Cent Committed Near Downtown. Says Sociologist. In downtown and near north west sections of Indianaixdis, about 6 per cent of the city’s area, live 36.58 per cent of its criminals. Professor R. Clyde White, social service department of Indianapolis university extension center, told the Indianapolis Council of Social Agencies Monday in Christ church. His facts were based on a survey by a bureau of social research of which he is director. Professor White said. The inquiry included residence of criminals convicted in Marion county criminal court the first six months of 1929. location of their crimes and residence of cases handled by the Family Welfare Society. * More than half the city's criminals live within two miles of the circle, and 71 per cent of crimes committed here are perpetrated in that district, he said. EXTRADITION GRANTED Mah at Ft. Wavnc to Fare Florida Shooting Charges. Governor Harry G. Leslie has approved extradition to Florida for John Maguire, now held in Allen county jail at Ft. Wayne. Maguire is wanted for alleged shooting of a policeman and railroad official during a robbery. Sheriff S. E. Stone, De Land. Fla., and the two men who were shot were on hand to aid the extradition. No defense was offered, however.

STATE WINS POINT IN WOOD MURDER TRIAL Court Sustains Objections to Questions in Depositions. Bv United Pratt MUNCIE, Ind., Jan. 28.—Depositions taken two weeks ago from Kentucky residents for use in behalf of the defense in the trial of _-.es E. S. Wood, confessed slayer of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Heath, were presented before the court today for elimination of questions declared by the state's attorneys to be objectionable. The depositions were first introduced Monday, but state counsel averred many questions asked were improper. Judge L. A. Guthrie sustained the objections. Witnesses testifying by depositions. two of them Kentucky physicians, asserted Wood was of unsound mind and told of instances in his life that substantiated their belief. Samuel Wood, father of the accused, and Hugh Tedrow', Newcastle, friend since boyhood, both testified Wood was not mentally responsible. The father said hs son returned from France changed mentally by his World war experiences. "He acted just like he was winding up a big drunk,” the fathe r said. “He didn’t walk like a sober man, was wabbly and limber-legged and seemed to w r ant to be let alone.” 2 COASTERS ARRESTED Police Enforce Rule to Protect Lives of Children. Following orders of Police Chief Jerry E. Kinney against coasting on unprotected streets, two youths were arrested Monday and ordered to appear in juvenile court. The chief’s orders followed the death of one child and injury of another while coasting on city streets not protected bv barriers.
