SNOW AND ICE HOLD FATE OF LOST AVIATORS Searchers Have Faint Hope for Eielson, Borland . in Far North. lit, CntGd T' rf *' NOME, Alaska, Jan. B—Hummocks of Ice and snow in the deserted Siberian wastes today still held secret the fate of Carl Ben Eielson and Earl Borland, Arctic aviators, whose wrecked relief plane was found after it had been missing since Nov. 9. Relays of workers who made their way to the scene of the wreck by mushing with dog teams, dug today in ever increasing circles around the masses of wreckage, scattered over a wide area when the ship struck the earth at top speed. The silence of the northland was broken for the first time since the wreck by the clang of steel shovels and picks as they dug into the frozen surface. There was little hope in the hearts of rescue workers that the airmen were alive. Instead, they expected only to come upon the bodies, thus settling tne mystery. An apparently faulty altimeter and a clock stopped at 3:10 p. m. were brought back by Crosson from the wreckage. While the altimeter indicated 1,000 feet, the crash ninety miles south of Cape North was almost at sea level, leading Crosson to believe Eielson drove the plane into the snow while thinking he was safely far above the surface. The mute evidence of the untouched provisions in the cabin was almost final proof to searchers that Eielson and Borland could not have survived the crash. But whether they Jumped before the impact, or were thrown out when the speeding plane broke up, only continued search might establish.

This la the thirteenth of a aeries by a looted authority, health adrlser to the "Four Hundred" of New York. BY JAC AUER Written for NEA Sert-lce TWO places where women accumulate rolls of fat that give an impression of tell-tale years are across the back of the neck and across the diaphragm. They are best eliminated by exercise. To reduce them by massage is pleasanter because it is easier. But if you exercise, the muscles strengthen as the fat comes off and the body has firm flesh, contours that are young and attractive. One of the best exercises to rid the figure of fat in the diaphragm and the shoulders, and at the same time treat the thighs and abdomen, is the “high scissors.” It can be dene only when one is somewhat limbered up by consistent exercise for several days. It should be done only a few times at first, in order not to tire you. 1. Lie flat on your back and stretch the body in a straight line. Then, balancing the body carefully,
Carol Cotton shows how to do the “high scissors” exercise. raise both legs to as near a vertical line as possible, raising up on to the shoulders. 2. Steady the body with your hands and begin the scissors kick. Keeping one leg vertical, kick the other down over the head until the toe touches the floor, keeping the knee stiff. This last point is important. If the knee bends, the exercise is not so efficacious. 3. Raise the leg until both are vertical; kick the other leg down over the head. This is excellent not only for reducing but as an aid to that perfect body control of muscles that makes for poise and grace. BRITISH ATTACK U. S. GN PEACE PACIjSICNING Charges Made That America Will Not Consent to Obligations. Bw LONDON *Jan. 28.—Despite bitter opposition led by Sir Austen Chamberlain, the house of commons set a fast pace Monday night by ratification, without vote, of the British signature to the optional clause of the permanent court of international justice at The Hague. Chamberlain, leading the opposition, made r. veiled attack on the United States for remaining outside the League of Nations. “We regard Britain's acceptance as a logical sequence to our commitment to the pact of Paris,” said Foregin Secretary Arthur Henderson. ‘Having ruled out war, surely it is only common sense to do everything in our power to put something in its place.” “If the foreign secretary’s argu-

ment has any meaning at all,” replied Chamberlain, “it means that the United States signature of the Kellogg pact is valueless unless supplemented by obligations, which, it is perfectly clear, they do not intend to enter.” It was presumed he referred to the League of Nations. Henderson’s argument in behalf of his signature of the optional clause was based largely on what he said was the change in the entire international situation due to

the Kellogg pact was barely more than a gesture unless the nations were willing to put their words into deeds by signing the optional clause.
