SUGGESTS USE OF CITY POLICE RADIOjNSTATE Fifield, in Talk at Purdue, Says System Would Block Crime. Plans to adopt the Indianapolis police department crime broadcast system to the entire state were unfolded by Secretary of State Otto G. Fifield today in addressing the sixteenth annual road school at Purdue university. “The Indianapolis police department now has a low wave length radio broadcasting station used to disseminate crime news to their cruising squads,” Fifield explained. “This station has enough power to reach all Indiana and to some extent, neighboring states. “I think arrangements could be made whereby this station would also broadcast for the state police. It could be very useful if all state policemen had receiving sets installed in their cars and offices. “It could be more useful if the same kind of sets were installed in the offices of all police departments and sheriffs of the various counties. ‘‘By this means, practically all

law enforcing agencies of the state could be made promptly aware of the commission of any crime of major importance. If the sheriffs of the counties had automobiles similiarly equipped, contact could be kept with squads when they are cruising in search of criminals. “Other states are adopting this means of better crime detection. It certainly is not amiss for Indiana to consider it "Pennsylvania has spent $750,000 for a tele-type system. Indiana probably can not afford such an elaborate arrangement, but the state undoubtedly could secure the service of the Indianapolis station at no great expense. “Receiving sets with loud speakers can be installed at a cost of not more than SSO, which would make it practical.” Fifield pointed out the increased need for state police and urged that the force be expanded. “We now* are at the mercy of the state budget committee,” he said.
