WFBM HEARING FOR INCREASED POWER IS NEAR Officials to Appear Before Radio Commission This Week. BY JOHN H. HAWKINS. Timrt Radio Editor The hearing to be conducted by the federal radio commission at Washington this week on the petition of WFBM that their power be increased *s of vital importance to every radio listener in Indiana. In view of the fact that WFBM is located in the center of the state, giving equal distribution to all parts of Indiana of any programs broadcast from the station, the problem resolves itself into the question of whether Indiana is to be given the radio service it is entitled to, or hot. To secure the higher power which is requested it will be necessary’ for the local station to assume the wavelength of WOWO at Ft. Wayne and WWVA at Wheeling, W. Va. The Ft. Wayne station at present is using 10,000 watts and reception in Indianapolis of this station is highly uncertain. It stands to reason that were WFBM to get a higher power rating, its broadcasts would be heard with ease in territory that can not now be reached by the Ft. Wayne station. WFBM in the past has maintained * high standard of programs selected, a much higher standard, in the opinion of the writer, than the ordinary station of the same power. It stands to reason that should the power of the station be increased, the program standards would eo still higher, bringing closer the ideal of the radio listener, perfect programs and reception. Another angle of Indiana broadcasting depending on the higher power for WFBM is the Indiana School of the Air now contemplated, should the station get. the increase. Under the supervision of state educational officials it is planned to broadcast for the benefit of the schools, programs worked out to the last detail so.- their educational Jvorth, this depends absolutely, however, on the local station getting the increase in power. Blythe Q Hendricks, business manager of WFBM. and Earl Mounce. studio director of the station, left Sunday night for Washington. The rest of the party, including Roy Thurman, commercial of the Indianapolis Power and Light Company: C. L. Harrod, general-manager and industrial commlsioner of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce; Roy M. Wlsehart, state superintendent of public instruction; Corbin Patrick of The Indianapolis Star, and John Hawkins of The Indianapolis Times, plan to leave tonight. A platinum wire has beeen drawn to a diameter so minute that 3,000,000 of them, side by side, would not occupy more than one inch.

FEDERAL POWER COMMISSION TO BE QUIZ TARGET Three Group Officials Will Be Queried by Senate Committee. By Scripps-Il award Xewspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, Jan. 20.—Affairs of the federal power commission will be aired at both ends of the capitol this week. For several days members of the senate interstate commerce committee have been studying records of the commission relating to accounting work. This week they expect to lay aside their study of communications long enough to question F. E. Bonner, executive secretary of the commission; C. A. Russell, solicitor, and William V. King, chief accountant. Ever since Bonner and Russell took office early in the summer there has been conflict between these three. Reductions Are Sought King and Russell have agreed that large reductions should be made in the accounts of capital expenditures submitted by various power companies. Bonner has failed to act on any of the recommendations for reductions presented him. He has stopped referring any legal questions to Russell, and it is understood, has recommended abolishment of his office. This week, also, the house appropriations committee will hold public hearings on its independent offices appropriation bill and including testimony by Bonner and Russell, both of whom were question within the last few’ days. Probe Fund Demands The appropriations committee, inquiring as to the amount of money needed to run the commission for the coming fiscal year, discovered the situation existing and inquired into it thoroughly. The federal power commission inquiry is interesting in view of recent recommendations by President Hoover that the commission be reorganized and consist hereafter of members who will give their full time to the work. At present, three cabinet members, the secretaries of w’ar, Interior and agriculture, compose the power commission. ITALIAN FLIER KILLED Search for Body of Schneider Cup Ace Is Continued.
