GARDNER FIRM HAS RECORD OF HALF CENTURY Specializes in Sheet Metal, Roofing and Similar Work. Three generations of Gardners have contributed to of the Joseph Gardner Company', 147-153 Kentucky avenue, specializing in tin, copper and sheet iron work of ali knids. To maintain the standards followed by the concern, since its start in 1882, each generation has been careful of every' job to retain the firm’s high reputation. Joseph Gardner came to Indianapolis in 1831 and entered employment of A. W. and R. L. McOuat, later reorganled as McOuat. Foote & Cos., then located on the site of the Lincoln, hotel. When the firm dissolved partnership in 1882, Gardner started in business for himself at 37 Kentucky avenue. The firm’s first job was for George Merritt & Cos., woolen mills. The firm makes a specialty of installing metal ceilings, skylights, cornices, ventilating and dustcollecting devices and blow-pipe work for factories, mills and foundries; manufacturers of tanks, chain guards, hoppers, repairs and replacement of guttering, roofing of all kinds, downspouting for private residence and factories, manufacturing of milk cans and dairy supplies, chimney tops, and other piping and castings. Recently the company developed anew use of sheet metal, that of decoration for display windows, which has been widely imitated throughout the country. Use of sheet metal, bronzed or silvered, was found to produce an effect similar to pleated fabric background, giving an unusual modernistic setting. The Gardner company placed aluminum leaf on the statehouse dome and repaired leaks in the roof. The firm has supplied sheet metal work for many large hotels and buildings throughout the country. Among the most outstanding display of its workmanship are the many lights and lanterns used in lighting the Hollywood hotel, Hollywood, Fla. To keep abreast of requirements of the sheet metal business, representatives of the firm watch output of sheet metal of the country and trained workmen study the latest methods for turning out high grade products. The company has a complete corps of employes available for all sorts of metal work. Because of its many years of experience, it has a decided advantage in testing devices. With ; careful supervision, an unusually j high grade of workmanship is put | into every contract.
