STATE TO PLAY LEADING ROLE IN DEATH TRIAL Attorney-General to Wage Fight Against Five Men in Murder Case. /? <?• ripps-Hotcar/l Nev 'paper Alliance GASTONIA, Jan. 18.—AttorneyGeneral Dennis G. Brummitt is expected to play a leading role for the prosecution in the trial at Charlotte next month of five mill employes indicted for the death of Ella May Wiggins. Nominally, the state's case will be in charge of John G. Carpenter, district solicitor, but Brummltt’s pre. r,v n'e will give assurance that it will be a real prosecution. Brummitt won out over Carpenter in the issue of whether th* Wiggins trial should be held at Gastonia or elsewhere Won Venue Change Fe won out. not only over the Solicitor but also over the law enforcement officers of Gastonia and Ga ton er inty, and over a hundred prominent citiz, ns including bankers. mill superintendents, merchants a.id preachers who petitioned the court through affidavits not ro move the trial. Even the five defendants joined In the protest. against the attorney-general's motion for a change In venue. Deprived of Rights They felt that to be tried in another county wouM deprive them of their “right and privilege of being tried by a jury, selected from the people of their county, with all the consolation, convenience, comfort and security which this means to them in the hour of severe crisis, when they are being tried for their life.” Affidavits from the Gastonia city manager, police chief, Sheriff of Gaston county, defendants and the de ense attorneys were read to the* court, while those of the leading citizens were handed to the judge. Granted Venue Chang© After hearing the arguments, and without reading the big batch of affidavits from citizens. Judge J. H. Clement granted the attorney-gen-eral's motion for a change of venue. Judge Clement, who will preside at the Wiggins trial at Charlotte, reviewed the labor disturbances in Gaston county which started last spring and ended with the killing of Mrss. Wiggins. He announced that the trial would start in Mecklenburg superior court, Feb. 24. An interesting feature of the affidavits was the admission, in most of them, of the Indifference of the people of this community toward the killing of Mrs Wiggins. City Manager Harry Ruder of Gastonia, for instance, said “the death of Mrs. Wiggins did not arouse the people any more than any other ordinary person. The citizenship have not. interested themselves In the matter one way or the other.”

Two Much Emphasis on Slender Hips and Not Enough on Flat Abdomen
Another exercise for “Rounding the 1930 Curves’’ Is described today by Jac Auer, health adviser to New York's “Four Hundred." In the sixth of a series of articles which he has written for The Times and NEA service. BV JAC AUER Written for NEA Service THE vogue for boyish figures during the past few years has placed too much emphasis upon slender hips and not enough upon flat abdomens. Mary women now are made to realize that they have accumulated extra flesh across their abdomens.
School Board Moves to Slice Building Costs
New Officials to Ask Bids on Three Heating and Ventilating Types. Reduction of about 25 per cent in cost, of the new $1,300,000 school building program, through ordinary economies and open and competitive heating and ventilating specifications, is to be sought by the new school board. H. Frank Osier, acting buildings and grounds superintendent. said today. “It is possible to wTite heating and ventilating specifications so contractors may bid on either the direct-indirect, splitor unit systems,” he said, “and I have been instructed to do this." He declared the changes can be made without scrapping the old plans, prepared modern direction of the old board and held up by the
Bill Designed for Aid of Realty Development
Calls for Commission to Supervise, Alleviate Problems.
Establishment of a county department of drainage engineering, sanitation and building inspection, designed to alleviate troubles met by residents in realty developments outside the city, will be presented in Dill form to the state legislature in .1931, County Commissioner John E. Shearer said today. The proposed commission, designed alter the city commission preforming similar duties, would be applied toward relieving some sections of periodical floods by unifying sewer systems over the whole county, as well as supervising home construction and health conditions. Shearer said. Sheearer said the commission would supervise development of outlyjig residential section, laying particular stress on sewer systems, which at present, according to Shearer, are in some sections wholly, inadequate to cope with rainy seasons. In some instances, it was pointed out, large developments are without sewers, depending on the antiquated “roadside ditch” system. Cne example, Shearer cited, is the area south of West Washington street in the 3100-4203 block, large parts of which have been inundated

Rounding the 1930 Curves-
This can be eliminated, but it needs consistent, hard exercise that rolls off the fat and strengthens the muscles. The new 1930 figure calls for curves. The fashionable waistline calls for as fiat an abdomen as possible to accent the bust and hip contours. There are many exercises to reduce tiie abdomen. The best single exercise is as follow's: 1. Sit on the floor, feet apart, knees pressed to the floor. Straighten back and then swing and twist body forward until the right hand sweeps the toes of the left foot, with

"A body such as is proposed would eliminate, at least in part, the practices of unethical contractors and realty developers who disregard any uniformity in building and drainage and would protect hemesite buyers who often are victims in buying sites that are undesirable in many respects,” he said.

the left arm as straight and far out behind as the right one is in front. 2. Swing the body above the waistline around, bend forward as before, and sweep the right foot with the left hand. This is strenuous and should be done only a few times at first. The back of the knees must stay pressed tight to the floor or the exercise is not correct. This exercise tones up the abdominal muscles and rolls off the fat stimultaneously. But it takes persistent, steady, daily exercise before effects are noticed. It is the best single exercise there is to flatten out the abdomen and rid it of fat. At the same time it stretches the back bone and gets the muscles through the body strong enough to help hold the abdomen in. Next: An exercise to reduce the hips and thighs.
