CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE AN Interview for her paper, probably! Sally would get a kick out of writing him up, even If she didn’t give a darn for him personally. But It was no newspaper reporter —only a white-faced, anxious-eyed girl, who appeared at the head of the stairs. “Howell, you fool! To get into a mess like that.” Her attitude knocked his tragic bearing Into a cocked hat. He retorted, “You were a helpful little friend. Didn’t come near me.” She seized his arm. “I did. The minute I had a chance. You'd gone to the hospital. 1 thought there was no use to follow you there so T came on home. “Os course, Howell, every newspaper reporter in town knows you were framed. It’s lucky for Mrs. Carleton Meade that those charges were withdrawn.” “That won’t help my reputation at home.” groaned Howell. "I’ve taken care of that,” Sally asserted, competently. “Our paper wired your mother that It was all a mistake. You were absolutely not connected with it.” He forgot she was engaged to another man. “Sally, you darling!” She said, smiling, “You see, the city editor’s a great friend of mine.” That put him back in his place But when he looked for the diamond he found it sparkling on her other hand. “Why don’t you wear it where it belongs?” he inquired, sulkily. “I do, I deceived you, darling. My aunt in Omaha sent me this ring.” Sunlight streamed through the window upon her flaming hair. “You little red-haired demon!— Sally, you angel!” She was in his arms. Crooning over him. Stroking his hair. “You need me so dreadfully. a a a HOW could he tell her now that he had decided to leave Hollywood and go home? “Asa motion picture actor I’m a flop,” he said. “I’m going home.” Her arms tightened. “Going back to school, you mean?” "Yes. If I leave right away I can get back for the last semester.” She was so dear, so adorably sweet. But the cheek pressed against his was suddenly wet with tears. “Mustn't cry about it, sweetheart! Tsn’t that what you wanted me to do?” Her voice sounded like a disappointed child’s. “And leave me here for three or four years?” “But, Sally, what else can I do?” “You can take me with you,” she wailed. As suddenly as they came her tears had stopped. She danced away from him.

The Right Thing to Do Good manners and good form are not affectations to be despised aa something “put on.” There are reasons for the forms of etiquet that have become part of the equipment of cultured people. “Always did want to be married to a doctor,” quoth Sally, joyfully. “But, darling, I’m not a doctor yet. It will be years before I’ll be able to support you.” “I can support myself. I’ve saved enough money to pay my own expenses for a while. Oh, Howell, if you know what I suffered last night you’d never ask me to leave you again.” “Sally, dearest, I’d rather marry you than anything in the world. But even if I were willing for you to support yourself, what could you dc back there? Perhaps you couldn't get work on those papers?” Sally grinned. “No editor in the world can resist me now,” she boasted. “Look at me. Darling, can you doubt it?” a a a HER eyes were radiant with love and courage. Her Ups trembled a little as if fearful of his reply. “Oh,” she sighed, “I’m being typically Hollywood. I’m proposing to you, Howell. Are you going to turn me down?”

GOTHAM PASTOR PREACHES HERE The Rev. John Langstaff Fills City Pulpit. ' One looks to God. imploring an answer to the question, ‘Why hast Thou dealt thus with us?’ ”, said the Rev. John Brett Langstaff of Grace church, New York, in his sermon Sunday at Christ church, Monument Circle and North Meridian street. “The lights and joys of the season just passed have sharpened the deep shadows of fear and disappointment. “The woman whose willing labor is the sole support of a family of small children, suddenly is stricken with some disabling disease. The clean living man of middle age w'hose faithful service always has been recognized with a fair wage, loses his position and finds no one over 40 acceptable in the many applications he makes for work with other firms. “The new born child dies in its mother’s arms. The lover is slain in war. The weak remain, the strong are taken. The unrighteous prosper at the expense of those who play the game fairly. To all this we repeat the words of the Mother of Jesus as she felt that He had deserted her in the Temple of Jerusalem : “ ‘Why hast Thou dealt thus with us?’ “It is the urgent and sincere interrogation from a God-fearing community,” he continued, “that

All the confidence he had lost since coming to California surged back like a tide. “I am not,” he declared, and took her back into his arms. “You’re going to be Mrs. Howell Sheffield as soon as I can get the licence and on your own head be the result.” “You would say that,” she managed to murmur, blissfully. Mr. Benton called from the kitchen that Mr. Sheffield was wanted on the telephone. He answered with Sally still hanging on his arm. “Central Casting, Howell! Working tomorrow?” “No!” shouted Howell. “Not ever again. I’m going home.” “Goodby and good luck,” chuckled the voice at the other end of the wire, but hung up, abruptly. For even if Howell Sheffield did leave Hollywood the motion picture business would go merrily on and Central Casting still be responsible for tomorrow’s "extras.” (The End)

TINY CHILDREN SMOKE Tobacco Relished at Tender Age In Blue Ridge Moutains. Bn United Press WASHINGTON, Jan. 13.—A party of Washington scientists, just returned from the Corbin Hollow district of the Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia, report that children of 4 or 5 years of age relish tobacco as much as do grownups in that section. The children thought the party “stingy” when members refused to pass out cigarets to them. Buenos Aires Sweltering Bn United Press BUENOS AIRES, Jan. 13.—The highest temperature recorded this season sent the thermometer searing to 97.8 degrees and today the heat shows no signs of abating. Rokoff leaped to his feet and, turning, faced the Swede cook. “Get out of here!” roared the Russian. For answei, the cook’e great hand slid to the handle of a long, slim knife beneath his greasy apron. Rokoff saw the move —and stopped short. Then in French he said to Lady Greystoke: “Tomorrow you shall answer. You will come to me willingly or 111 kill the child before your very eyes!”

With those ominous words Rckoff banged out of the cabin. After a moment of silence the Swede spoke. The idiotic look that had masked his thoughts fell away, giving place to one of craft and cunning. “He think I'm fool,” he whispered. “I savvy French. You bane good to me. He treat me like dirty dog. I help you lady. You yust vait. I help you escape.” Jane could hardly believe her ears. Was escape possible?

Later when he brought her frugal dinner, he whispered very low: “Leave on your clothes an’ roll your blankets. I come back after you purty soon.” He would have slipped from the room at once, but Jane laid her hand upon his sleeve. “My baby?” she asked. “I can not go without him.” He made no answer. When he had gone, Tarzan's wife sank into utter bewilderment. Suspicion as to the Intentions of this Swede swarmed through her brain.

Yet, she reasoned, she could be no worce off in his company than with Nikolas Rokoff and his gang. And so she obeyed the Swede’s instructions. At midnight came a soft tap at her door. Cautiously she unbolted it to admit the muffled figure of the cook. He came quit* close to her. Extending one of the bundles he carried, he thrust it into her arms “Do not make some noise,” he said. “It bane your kid.”
