In the World of Books

BY EDNA LEVEY Without doubt, the most remarkable feature of the year in the literary world has been the amazing preponderance of good war books, and the avidity with which the public has received them. It seems that only now. sixteen years after the general upheaval, are we ready to look squarely at the high-pressure psychology of men at war. The best German point of view is exemplified by Remarque’s “All Quiet on the Western Front;” the best English war book is Blunden’s “Undertones of War,” and the best book anywhere is Hemingway’s “A Farewell to Arms.” There has been an ever-increasing interest in simply-written scientific books like Sir James Jeans’ “The Universe About Us.” and A. S. Eddington's "The Nature of the Physical World,” with its amazing last chapter on “Science and Mysticism,” in which the question is considered as to who is nearer reality, the physicist or the poet?' a a a What books will continue their triumphal march into 1930? Which ones will continue to be the vortex of provocative discussion? I will

change four—Lippmann’s “A preface to Morals,” Dakin’s "Life of Mrs. Eddy,” Hemingway’s "A Farewell to Arms” and Richard Hughes’ "The Innocent Voyage.” It is a thrilling time for readers the world over. Books are as important today as diets, divorces, or Dadaists. But not quite so important as football. That contingency would approach the millennium. Is there, perhaps, a glorious time coming when a man will buy a book as casually as a cigarette? When a publisher could advertise “Be nonchalant Buy Dorothy Parker’s ‘Enough Rope’,” or “Walk a Mile for ‘A Preface to Morals,’ It Satisfies.” • an Let me consider Phyllis Bottome’s new novel, “Windlestraws,” an English story of the hard-living, hardriding, hard-bohed horsey set. It has come over-blared by the blurber’s trumpet. Though one knows of old the eminently satisfying skill of the author in handling her material, yet this story of a hard and lovely peeress pulling the strings that jerk her husband, her lover and the other woman, strikes one as a flat, stale, and unprofitable note. Will publisher’s blurbs ever really mean anything? a * a Ernest Dimnet, author of “The Art of Thinking,” now in its umpty-umph thousands, rebukes gently but firmly the levity of both John Cowper Powys and Bertrand Russell in their recent debate in New York City on the subject, “Modern Marriage.” Abbe Dimnet, it seems, went for a quiet little evening of serious thinking and was rebuffed by a “light and happy banter.” “In the interests of American culture,” grieves Abbe Dimnet, “such a way of approaching a great moral question should be discouraged.” Thank heaven, say we, that somebody can take modern marriage as a jest. We are bored to extinction with the way practically everybody in the world is ponderously weighing the question. A little humor injected into the situation might save the day. More power, Powys and Russell! We have found the prize quotation for a library, suggested by no less a person than the late prime minister of England, Stanley Baldwin. He says that the best inscription for a library wall is that chosen by an eager young warrior for his destroyer, “Ut**veniant omnes,” or in English, “Bring ’em on!" Roman Coins Found Bv United Press SOFIA, Jan. 6.—ln the Bulgarian village of Dewnja two brothers TodorofT while digging in their vineyard discovered several pounds of gold and silver coins which date from Roman times.
