DETROIT WOMEN BAND TO SEEK DRY REFORMS Necessity for Changes to Be Discussed at Convention. ISv United Prre* DETROIT, Dec. 30—Believing that “the principle of the eighteenth amendment and the Volstead act t wrong’’ and prohibition has not accomplished what was promised, a group of prominent Detroit women have joined the Women’s Organization for National Prohibition Reform. Mrs. Edwin S. Barbour, a member of the Michigan advisory council of th association, who is in charge of organization work here, outlined the club’s views as follows: Temperance Is Objective “Temperance is the real objective We do not believe temperance can be obtained through prohibition We do not favor the return of the saloon, but we believe that the speakeasy and the bootlegger exert an even worse influence than did the saloon. The increase of drinking among our boys and girls is one of the phases of the intemperance that has come with prohibition. “We do not claim to have the answer to the problem, but we hope to find the answer. To Enlist Help "Our present task is to enlist help of sane thinking women throughout the nation. We will hold a national convention at Cleveland in April, and at that time we hope to be able to suggest a workable law as a substitute for the present prohibition act. “We will bring what influence we have to bear upon the members of the legislatures and of congress to effect the reform.”

FINISH STRIKES SURVEY Marion, N. C.. Troubles Not Due to Outside Influence, Finding. Bor United Free* NEW YORK, Dec. 30.—The strikes of textile workers in Marlon. N. C., are not due to the Influence of “outside agitators,” but to a spontaneous revolt of the mill-workers themselves due to present conditions, according to the report of an investigation made by the research department of the Federal Council of Churches. Far from being instigated by outside agitators, the Marion workers tried to get a labor union representative to help organize a union in an effort to remedy mill conditions, the report states.
