FRANCE STANDS BEHIND TARDIEU FOREIGN POLICY Press Supports Action of Premier: Given Big Vote of Confidence. flu United Press PARIS, Dec. 28.—The unanimity with which the press and the chamber of deputies have received Premiere Andre Tardieu’s foreign policy and the French memorandum on its naval policy has surprised even the most optimistic friends of the administration. The press warmly supports France's stand, particularly regarding her interests in the Mediterranean. “The memorandum was logical, clear and high minded,” says Le Temps. “It leaves no room for equivocation and reveals no sacred egoism.” The surprising vote of confidence, 242 to 17, accorded Tardieu by the chamber of deputies after his announcement and the debate on the French policy, amazed even cabinet members. The Radical-Socialists abstained from voting. Tardieu's outline was brilliant. He demanded a clear-cut vote in order to go to London unhampered. “If you think we have done wisely, say so,” he told the deputies. "Let France’s prestige neither be diminished nor divided at The Hague.” WIRES BUSY CHRISTMAS More Than 8,000 Telegrams and Cable Messages Delivered in City. More than 8,000 telegrams and cablegrams conveying Christmas greetings were delivered by Western Union to Indianapolis business houses and homes on Dec. 24 and Christmas day, according to A. A. Brown, city superintendent. National figures show the company handled more than 2,000,000 telegrams and cablegrams of Christmas greetings, a record total.

SPECIAL TREATY RIGHTS IN CHINA TO BE KEPT UP U. S. Citizens Expected to Have Little Trouble After New Year. Ily United Press WASHINGTON, Dec. 28.—The United States will maintain special treaty rights in China, regardless of the Nationalist government’s reported intention to cancel extraterritoriality privileges Jan. 1. Violence is not expected to result from such policy, it is learned. Dispatches from Nanking say the new year will be begun with wholesale cancellation of special privileges enjoyed by citizens of Great Britain, Holland, France and the United States. Other treaty powers, except Japan, have signed treaties with China foregoing special privileges when those rights are withdrawn from all enjoying them. The practical effect of Chinese cancellation of special rights to foreigners is expected here to be a crop of annoying and continuing incidents, in which American citizens in the interior of China will suffer from Chinese efforts to make them amenable to Chinese courts. In the principal cities the present system is expected to continue without major changes. So far, the United Press is informed, China has not advised the United States of an intention to cancel American privileges on any particular date. The subject was raised in an exchange of notes this year. Secretary Stimson informed China this government would negotiate gradual abolition of extra-territo-rial privileges at any time, but that relinquishment would have to be accompanied by corresponding modernization of China’s legal system. OWN DEATH SERMON IS READ AT FUNERAL Judge Keeps Promise and Delivers Ten-Year-Old Ovation. Bn United, Prone COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Dec. 28.—Ten years ago James M. Scott, 86, wrote his own funeral sermon and gave it to District Judge Arthur Cornforth with the request that the Judge read it at his funeral. Scott died Christmas day. His Funeral was held here Friday and, in accordance with his last wish, Judge Cornforth read the funeral oration, consisting of twenty pages of longhand. It was a summary of Scott’s religious beliefs, centering on nature worship.

HAWKINS Times Radio Editor Among the many complaints of bad radio rer/pcAm being turned into tills department daily many are of the same general tone. It sums up to the fact that the radio set is not giving the service it did last year, or six months ago, or words, to that effect. yM In almost every case of this kin* when investigated it is founJ thao the tubes in use in the set are the ones that were supplied with the receiver, they have never been changed. The best of radio tubes have a life of only 700 to 1.000 hours, and this limit is exceeded three and four, or more times before the radio listener begins to suspect that new tubes might help him. The radio in the ordinary family is used on an agerage of ten hours a day. At this rate after three months have passed it is necessary to get new tubes to have perfect receotion. Figured on an average of five hours a day, which means turning on the radio very seldom, the tubes have lived their natural life in six months time. The moral is: Get a set of new tubes if your present ones are six months old or more, it will be a revelation to you in entertainment returns.
