N.Y. EXCHANGE TO PAY LARGE HOLIDAY BONUS Commission Houses Suffer During Record Decline in Stock Market. Rv United Preen NEW YORK, Dec. 21—Brokerage house workers are reaping the largest harvets of gold this Christmas that was ever distributed by New York Stock Exchange brokers and banking Institutions, notwithstanding the abrupt decline in values on the exchange last month. Led by Peter P. McDermott & Cos., members of the New York Stock Exchange, which is distributing a 100 per cent bonus to old employes, practically every banking and brokerage institution in Wall street is making extra cash distributions to! workers. Payments range from 100! per cent downward, with most of the j leading banks making payments of j 5 to 10 per cent. Not only are bonuses larger, but j the ranks of the Wall street work- j ers have been swelled tremendously j by the record trading of 1929. making this Christmas the most golden in the history of the street.

Bonuses Estimated Estimates of bonus payments range from $250,000,000 to $500,000,000, with most emphasis placed on the latter figure. This is an increase of at least 25 per cent over the record payments of 1928. Many of the larger commission houses reported to have suffered severe reverses during the record decline In the stock market are said 10 be making large cash distribution to workers, setting at rest reports several weeks ago that bonuses this year would show a sizable shrinking. Aside from this heavy distribution of bonuses, employes in a number of houses have received substantial payments through the year. Several houses paid bouses ranging up to five weeks’ salary at Thanksgiving, while many others paid large overtime wages durng the record trading of October and November. The New York Stock Exchange itself is paying a bonus of 10 per cent to its 1,800 workers, while Charles D. Barney is paying bonuses ranging from 5 to 80 per cent of annual salaries. Among the larger banks, the Guaranty Trust is paying 10 per cent to many employes, while the Harriman National Bank and Trust is paying 10 to 20 per cent and the Irving Trust four weeks’ pay. Other Houses Pay Largest Other bank bonuses follow: Chemical Bank and Trust. 12 1 4 per cent; Title Guarantee and Trust, up to 27.4 per cent; Bank of New York and Trust, 10 per cent; Hibernia Trust, 10 per cent; International Acceptance Bank, Inc., 2 o 15 per cent; Interstate Trust, 5 per cent; International-Madison bank, 5 per cent, and Long Island National bank 5 per cent. Among the brokerage houses, H. A Linde & Cos. is paying to 25 per cent; Engel & Cos., 10 per cent; Throckmorton & Cos., 10 to 20 per cent; Potter & Cos., 15 per cent; McCauley & Cos.. 10 per cent; Henry Clews & Cos., one ninth's salary; Gertler, Devlet & Cos., four to ten weeks’ salary; Clarence Hodson Sz Cos., one to four weeks’ salary; Barton & Barton. 25 per cent; Orton, Kent & Cos., 10 per cent, and American Founders, 5 per cent.
