WINDSTORM AND FIRE FATAL TO TWO ON COAST Hollywood Mansions Periled by Flames: 2,000 Fight Blazes. By United Brine LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21.—Two dead, five injured and property damage estimated at several thousand dollars was the toll taken by windstorms and destructive grass and brush fires in southern California, a checkup today revealed. Clarence Easley, 65, was killed when blown from the roof of a chicken house on his ranch near Pomona. J. B. Dollar, a park gardener, died of injuries suffered when a truck carrying fighters to a brush fire in the Hollywood hills overturned. Five others were treated for severe burns received while fighting the fire. Small buildings, power lines and trees were blown down by a severe windstorm that blew off the Moja -e desert Friday. The sun was ooscured by clouds of dust that hampered traffic and deposited a fine powder in homes and business houses. Approximately 1,000 acres of beautiful park land in the hills of Griffith park were denuded and blackened by a spectacular fire that for a time threatened to destroy scores of mansions in the Los Feliz section. The flames, swept onward by high wind, were checked almost at the doors of several homes. The buildings were saved by the heroic efforts of firemen, assisted by more than 2,000 volunteer fire fighters. The roar of the flames could be heard for miles and the heat was so intense that men fighting their progress were in many instances forced to flee for their lives. Birds and small animals driven from the hills sought refuge in Hollywood. Hastily constructed firebreaks and the wetting down of unburned areas finally brought the blaze under control. NEED FRUIT FLY FUNDS Fight Against Mediterranean Pest Is Curtailed Greatly. Bv Science Service WASHINGTON, Dec. 21. The recommendation of President Hoover to congress for the passage of a special appropriation of $15,000,000 for continuing the fight against the Mediterranean fruit fly in Florida can not be acted upon too soon, in the opinion of the plant quarantine control the administrative division of the department of agriculture. The work, instead of being greatly expanded since October as desired, was curtailed due to lack of available funds, according to a statement recently read to the house appropriations committee by Dr. C. CROSSING CRASH FATAL Brother of Noted Musician Dies Near Pennsylvania Home. Bv United Press TYRONE, Pa., Dec. 21.—Monroe C. Waring, a brother of Fred and Tommy Waring, owners of the famous orchestra, Waring’s Pennsylvanians, was injured fatally Friday night and his wife Lois was hurt seriously when the automobile was struck by a Pennsylvania railroad train near their home here. Waring died in the Altoona hospital, where they were taken. Mrs. Waring was reported in a critical condition. Slight hope for her recovery was expressed by hospital attaches.

‘JAIL WILL DO ME GOOO’ Asks Prison Sentence for Brother; Sentence Is Welcomed. Bv United Press CHICAGO, Dec. 21.—The spirit of peace on earth and good will to men caused A. W. Graham to have his brother sent to jail as a burglar. In the same spirit the brother, Frank Graham, thanked him. “Frank is a burgler. Send him to jail and cure him,” urged A. W. Graham in Judge Herbert G. Immenhauesn’s court. The judge sentenced Frank to sixty days in the Bridewell. He had been! arrested with burglars’ tools. “You are right,” Frank told his brother as they shook hands, “This will do me good.”

POLICE, FIREMEN DONATESISO TO NEEDYOF CITY Emergency Fund Money to Be Used for Christmas Baskets for Poor. Appropriation of $l5O from the police and firemen’s emergency fund for the fire department’s Christmas baskets, was ordered today by the fund committee, Fred W. Connell, safety board president, announced. The baskets will be distributed by various engine houses. Women employes at city hall have aramged baskets of groceries and clothing for twelve .families, including 100 children, Miss Ruby Hcndleman, Christmas chairman, said. Miss Hendleman, Henry C. Goett, secretary to the mayor, Street Commissioner Charles A. Grossart, Recreational Director Jesse P. McClure and Miss Esther Kremm compose the committee arranging the city hall Christmas party for Tuesday. Fruit and presents will be given out around the Christmas tree in the rotunda. Commenting on the Christmas party, one city employe declared: “They may call it a Christmas party, but it’s a farewell party to some of them.” It is predicted the Democratic ax will fall on many Republican employes after Jan. 6, when MayorElect Reginald H. Sullivan takes office.

INJURED WOMAN PAYS TO KEEP MAN IN JAIL Motorist Does Not Refund for Damages; Remains in Prison. By United Press CHICAGO, Dec. 21.—The law has upheld Miss Fannie Kaplan’s grudge against the motorist who injured her and whom she has been keeping in Jail by paying $3.50 weekly for his board. “He hurt me and now I intend to hun him,” Miss Kaplan, 20, . explaii :ed to Circuit Judge Klarkowski when friends of Anthony E. Heiderich sought his release on a habeas corpus writ. “It he doesn’t choose to pay the ; $2,500 damages a jury awarded me,” ; Miss Kaplan went on, “I want him to suffer as he made me suffer. I bear a grudge and am more than willing to bear the expense of his Jail bill.” Last week Miss Kaplan was ill and paid the $3.50 through her attorney. .Heiderich’s friends contended that was illegal. Judge Klarkowski ruled the confinement was legal and the method of payment proper. The sentence is for six months. FORMER PRESIDENT DIES Emile Loubet, One-Time Chief Executive of France, Passes. By United Press MONTELIMAR, France, Dec. 21, —The French government today conferred with members of the family of Emil Loubet, former president of France, on plans for a state funeral for the statesman who guided the destinies of the republic from 1899 to 1906. Former President Loubet died Friday of uremia, after a long illness. He would have been 92 on Dec. 31.
