PENNSYLVANIAN ONCE MORE IS ENVOY TO SPAIN Important U. S. Post to Be Taken by Laughlin in Few Days. Bv United prrisß MADRID. Spain. Dec. 19—With the arrival here of Invin Boyle Laughlin, who is to present his credentials to King Alfonso within a few days as American ambassador to Spain, this important post once more is filled by a Pennsylvanian as it has been almost constantly since the legation was raised to embassy rank in 1913. The first amba.ssador. appointed by President Woodrow Wilson, was Joseph E. Willard of Virginia, but when President Harding took office, he appointed Cyrus E. Woods oi Greensburg, Pa., to the Madrid post. Upon Woods' return home, another man from Pennsylvania, Alexander P. Moore, Pittsburgh publisher, became the United States representative here. He was followed by a New Jersey man, Ogden H. Hammond, and the ambassadorship once more reverts to Pennsylvania with Laughlin’s arrival. Shortly after Ambassador Laughlin presents his credentials to the king, the counselor of the embassy, Sheldon Whitehouse. will leave for the United States, prior to taking up his new duties as minister to Guatemala Before coming to Madrid in 1928, Whitehouse was coun*elor to the American embassy in Paris.
