MILLIONAIRES IN SENATE NUMBER 12 WITH GRUNDY Present Group Largest of Wealth Ever Seated in Upper House. BY PAUL R. MALLON United Pres* Staff Cc,V4^Ment WASHINGTON. Dec. 17.—When Joseph R. Grundy of Pennsylvania, brought his reported personal fortune of $30,000,000 to the United States senate, he brought the total of reputed millionaires holding senate seats to twelve, according to information given the United Press today. This is the largest group of men of large wealth ever assembled in the upper house and its represents one-eighth of the total senate membership. With President Hoover, a millionaire, calling upon the wealthiest men in the country to aid him in cabinet, diplomatic and lesser government posts, senators are discussing among themselves the trend of the times which has attracted successful men of great fortunes to public business and public service for salaries which hardly would pay their rent. Wealthy Colleagues Senators are interested particularly in their own twelve wealthy colleagues, including ten Republicans and two Democrats. Among them Senator Lawrence C. Phipps (Rep., Colo.) is reputed to be the wealthiest man in the senate. His fortune is estimated well above $50,000,000, even since the decline of United States Steel values on the Stock Exchange. Two states, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, have senators all of whom are reputed to be millionaires. Before Grundy was appointed, Senator David A. Reed, former attorney for Secretary of Treasury Mellon, was the sole Pennsylvania senator. His fortune was made as a corporation lawyer. The two New Jersey senators are Hamilton F. Keane, bankers and farmers, and David H. Baird Jr„ whose families are among the oldest and richest in the state. Joke About Bolshevism The two who joke about being Bolshevists are Senator James R. Couzens of Michigan and Senator Bronson Cutting of New Mexico, both Republicans. Couzens is reported to be worth about $33,000,000, accumulated in the development of the Ford Motor Company, as a partner of Henry Ford. Cutting’s fortune is considerably less. His family Is one of the bluest of blue bloods. The farm bloc leader Is Senator Arthur Capper (Rep., Kan.), whose money is invested largely in newsper properties. Others listed in the millionaire class are: Senator John B. Kendrick (Dem. Wyo.), ranch owner and livestock man. Senator Reed Smoot (Rep., Utah). Senator William F, Brock (Dem.. Tenn >, camdy manufacturer who started as a. traveling salesman. Senator Jesse Metcalf (Rep., R. T.t. mill owner. A millionaire member of the senate died within the last month, Senator Francis E. Warren (Rep. Wyo.). Woman Dies at 92 CAMBRIDGE CTTY, Ind., Dec. 17. —Mrs. Charlotte Dinwiddie, 92, a former resident here, died at the Margaret Smith home for aged women at Richmond. She was the oldest inmate here. She had spent practically all of her life here. Mrs. Dinwiddie was born in Ludlow county, Ohio.

SKIRT LENGTHS WRONG IN U. S., PARISIAN SAYS New Style Not Understood; Women Take Extreme, Stylist Hints. By United Preit NEW YORK, Dec. 17.—A1l the excitement over the long skirts now appears to have been unnecessary. Jacques Worth, French couturier here from Paris, is amazed at the way American women have interpreted the new styles and says the result is all wrong. “Nowhere in Paris during daytime hours have I seen such exaggeration of skirt lengths as I have seen In New York,” he said. “American women think it ever so much more fashionable to outdo their neighbors and wear skirts to the ankles. “You never have seen a French gentlewoman wtih her skirts above her knees, nor do you see her now with her skirts touching the streets and bringing home dust and germs. “The perfect length for the street, business or sports dress is two ‘Scotch fingers’ below the kneeline.” M. Worth said the corset was not necessary with the new styles and that an elastic belt was sufficient.
