SKELETONS MAY PROVE TO BE ‘MISSING LINK 1 British Scientists Stirred by Important Discovery in China. Hu United Press LONDON, Dec. 16.—British scientific circle were stirred today by the reported discovery, thirty miles from Peiping. China, of the fossilized bones of ten headless men, believed to have lived 1,000,000 years ago. In the burial place, which was uncovered by scientists working under direction of the Rockefeller foundation and the geological survey of China, was only one complete human skull, but this is reported to have been in splendid condition, with facial bones and perfect cranium. "It may be the most remarkable and most important contribution yet made to the story of human developments,” anthropologists are agreed, "and this discovery may go down in history as more important than that of the Plitdown, Neanderthal or Java ape-man.” Whether the skeletons will prove to be the so-called "missing link” between man and his alleged anthropoidal ancestors can be determined only after long study, they say. In the same spot where the scientists uncovered the human fossils, they came upon the skeleton of a prehistoric rhinoceros. The Rockefeller institute has given the skull, which is more complete and better preserved than that of the Java man, into the custody of Dr. Davidson Black, eminent Canadian paleontologist, for study. The first scientific explanation of the ’’Peiping man” will be given to the world on Dec. 23 at a convention in Peiping. STRIKE IN TENTH DAY Dispatches, Telegraph Operators Join With Mexican Tra’nmen. Hu United Press MEXICO CITY, Dec. 16.—The Mexican railway strike entered its tenth day today, with distpatches and telegraph operators joining with the trainmen. President Portes Gil, is attempting to arbitrate the dispute. Coyotes and Bear Stolen Bn Times Sn. ini COLUMBUS. Ind.. Dec. 16.—Two coyotes have been stolen from a steel wire cage at a filling station here, and a bear from the Nokomois reservation of Chief Eaglefeather in Brown county, Sheriff Alonzo E. BOOK BUYING IS UNAFFECTED BY MARKET CRASH More Than Ever Will Be Given for Christmas, Says Publisher. Bv United Press _ NEW YORK, Dec. 16.—There will be many books beneath the family Christmas tree this year, according to J. W. Lippincott, president of the National Association of Book Publishers, who say that reports from publishers and booksellers in all parts of the country indicate that the recent stock market debacle has not curtailed holiday book buying, Mr. Lippincott is president of the J. B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia. “Trade records show that ir ‘seasons of financial depression the book business has not suffered, but has gone ahead. This was true in 1907 and in 1918, and probably is due to the fact that books< offer a really worth while investment and an easy escape from monetary worries. They always are popular choices as Christmas gifts because of their intrinsic, enduring value, into which the factor of price does not enter. “Biographies are leading in public demand this month, according to booksellers’ reports, with other nonfiction books on modern exploration, science and travel closely following. “Some novels are having phenomenal sales, but many first novels by new authors are hard to sell just now, because of concentrated public interest in a few titles. Despite the tendencies of the machine age, many volumes of poetry are being purchased for holiday gifts, while children’s books are selling as never before. “One of the most significant buying trends this year is in the demand for finely printed books, limited editions, and beautifully illusstrated books. Though some df these books are expensive, they are having a great vogue, because of their obvious value. They have supplanted the old-fashioned ornate gift books which were designed for display on the parlor table rather than for reading. "Publishers are not curtailing their editorial or advertising plans for 1930. Many firms report that sales for 1929 have equalled or surpassed 1928 which was a banner year in the book trade. "An unusual number of new retail outlets and the opening up of new markets through the growth of school libraries and public libraries, are outstanding features of the trade records of 1929. An optimistic spirit as to sales in the iext few months prevails throughout the industry.”

RADIO CLUB TO INSTRUCTCLASS Methods of Amateur Radio Work to Be Taught. A class in code instruction tylll be started tonight by the Indianapolis Radio Club at the club rooms. 460 Century building. The class is for those radio fans who wish to learn the method of communication used by amateur radio operators throughout the world. The continental, or international Morse, code, is being taught. Robert Caskey, chief operator of the club, will be tn charge. From now until the class has reached a reception speed of ten words a minute, the weekly sessions will be held. All who desire to benefit by this instruction are asked to be at the club rooms propmtly at 7p. m. Graduates of this class will be able to qualify under government regulations in securing an amateur radio operator’s license. No entrance fee or tuition is charged by the club for this instruction; all that is required is a sincere interest in amateur radio. Information regarding Naval Reserve radio work will be given out at tonight’s meeting, as several members of this branch of the service will be present.
