POLICE ROUNDUP FAILS TO GURB BANDITRY WAVE Cab Drivers Are Robbed by ‘Passengers’; One Beaten About Head. Despite police roundup of suspicious characters, especially directed at gun toters, bandits continued to plague the-city last night and today, A taxicab bandit, who sometimes operates alone and who sometimes has a partner, held up three cab drivers early today, beating one driver severely with a gun butt. Two burglars, sufprised in the Herman Kelso bicycle shop at '>4B Virginia avenue, fled before a hail of bullet' fired by Kelson and one is believed to have been wounded. Slugged and Itobbed Paul Dunbar, 21, of 290 North Lynn street; driver of a Red cab, was beaten by two bandits and robbed of $5 and his cab at midnight. He was engaged to drive the men to 4200 Sunset avenue, w'here they attacked him and beat him with a gun butt. Description of one of the two bandits given by Dunbar corresponds to that of a bandit who held up Andrew C. .Jackson, 28, of 409 West South street, cab driver, and who escaped with $4 and a $55 wrist watch. The bandit engaged Jacksons cab on the Circle and was driven to Twenty-third street and Hillside avenue, where lie robbed Jackson at the muzzle of a gun. The bandit took Jackson s cab. Get Away in Car Frank Judd, 21, oi 407 East Ohio street, was the third cab driver holdup victim. He drove two men to Maywood, where they took $4.50 and escaped in another automobile parked near by. Mrs. Francis Schecki, lunch wagon proprietor at 846 East Washington street,, was held up and robbed of $11.90 Tuesday night. The bandit laid down his cap to contain the small change she gave him from the cash register. Clothing and jewelry valued at $240 were stolen from the apartment, of Ralph Williams, apartment 218. Colten apartments. Tenth street and College avenue, Tuesday night. Tlie .T K. Barnhill gorcery at 275 South Temple avenue was looted of S2O worth of foodstuffs by burglars. Police had no clews to a sneak thief who took almost S4OO in cash from guests of a downtown hotel Monday night. The losses were: H. P. Taylor, v ’'"rgh. s2ll and a watch; James F. Hines, New Haven. HEROIC NURSES SAVE PATIENTS FROM FLAMES Guide All Charges Through Dense Smoke Pervading Hospital Wards. Ilu United I’rrxx WILLSBORO, Ore., Dec. 11.— Seven nurses, whose heroism resulted in the rescue of twenty-five patients when fire swept through the Washington county hospital near here Tuesday night, tended their patients in private homes where they were given temporary shelter today. When the cry of “fire" rang through the hospital, followed by dense clouds of acrid smoke, the sc.en nurses on duty through ciily of the patients scattered through several wards. The nurses ran through the wards, reassuring each patient and averting panic. Then they wrapped the frightened patients in blankets and guided them through the smoke to doorways. Many of those ill in the hospital were women and children. One, a blind man, groped his way to a balcony and cowered there, too terrorstricken to cry out. He narrowly averted being overlooked. The fire, which started in the basement where janitors had been working, raced upward, turning the two-stpry structure into a furnace. Many patients still were trapped in the upper wards when firemen arrived. their escape cut off by walls of flame. Motorists joined the firemen and frantic rescue efforts began. Ladders were thrown up to windows and all the patients were carried to safety. An 8-year-old boy was carried down a ladder on a fireman's shoulder. The building was destroyed. BRITISH SOLDIER DIES Native of California Served With Distinction During World War. Bn United Press BATH. England, Dec. 11.—MajorGeneral Joseph Howard Poett, 71, died here late Tuesday. He was a native of California, and served with distinction in the British army during the World war, being mentioned five times in dispatches.
