U. S. CRUISER IS DISPATCHED i TO SHANGHAI Battleship Starts for China to Safeguard Interests of Americans. Bu United Preta MANILA. P. 1., Dec. 10.—The United States cruiser Pittsburgh, with Admiral Charles McVay aboard, departed at midnight for Shanghai to protect American interests during the present Chinese crisis. The Pittsburgh was preceded out of Manila by six destroyers of the Thirty-ninth American division—the McCormick, Bulmer, Simpson, MacLeish, Edsall and Parrott. Admiral McVay said his presence at the “center of trouble” was necessary, due to a desire to protect American lives in China. Erect Barricades Bu United Preet SHANGHAI, Dec. 10.—Precautionary moves by foreign governments to protect their citizens and extensive troop movements belied today the claims of General Chiang Kai-Shek that the Nationalist government was in complete control of the series of revolutions, which are threatening the Nanking central government of China. French concession authorities at Nanking today began the erection of barbed wire barricades at the entrances to Chinese territory. The measure was announced as only precautionary for the protection of French citizens. The British aircraft carrier was en route to Shanghai, from Hong Kong, bearing 560 British troops to reinforce the three warships already here. The situation which Monday appeared serious with the arrival of several British and Americans, fleeing from Nanking, appeared to have eased considerably today. Two divisions of Nationalist troops have entered Nanking to assist in the preservation of order there, especially in the resumption of service on the Shanghai-Nanking rail line which twice has been interrupted by removal of the tracks by rebels.

Listen to Straight Talk About Radio
radio IS PRECISION BUILT Up to a Standard, Not Down to a Price People are fed up on “The best in Radio” and “Finest reception in America.” Howard makes no extravagant claims. There is no “ballyhooing” of so-called “new departures in radio receiving.” But since 1909 A. A. Howard has experimented and built both broadcasting and receiving apparatus. As one of the pioneers in radio, the Howard Company, organized in 1921, has confined its activities exclusively to the manufacturing of radio apparatus. The Howard Radio is not a production set,. for this is impossible in precision building. The only claim made is that fearlessly you are asked to compare it with any set built and then judge its low price on that basis.

Once upon a time the cutting of prices was thought to stimulate buying. These cuts were made, either because of over-production, economies in buying and production, or the manufacturing of something almost as good. While this antiquated merchandising idea still exists in some quarters, the American public is suspicious of reduced prices without a logical reason for such reductions. This is particularly true of the individual who paid full price for the merchandise a week before the cut was made. Radio, to give the expected results, must be precision built, the engineering must be absolutely sound, the parts used must be of the finest quality obtainable and all these parts perfectly and accurately balanced. A radio, to be really worth any investment of money, must be built up to a standard, not down to a price. . - People have stopped buying a radio for just this season. What do a few dollars more matter if you are buying a radio that will be new next year and the next? What do a few dollars more matter if one radio excels another in both appearance and performance? True, there are people to whom price is the sole consideration. But these people are unable either to pay a little more or are wholly lacking in appreciation of life’s finer things. These are the people who would not distinguish true reception from distorted; these are the people to whom fine cabinet work means nothing.
