SENATORS WILL RUSH ACTION ON TAX CUT BILL Watson Gets Consent of Opponents to Speed Up Reduction Draft. BY PAUL R. MALLON Ini ted Pres* Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Dec. 10.—A peace plan has been negotiated by Senator James E. Watson, Republican floor leader, to get the administration's $160,000,000 tax reduction bill through the senate next Friday. Unable to get consent for consideration of the measure now, Watson has promised the senators interested in Muscle Shoals that their legislation will be taken up soon and has delayed the tax bill so at least one senator can prepare an amendment. He has obtained their promise of co-operation in taking up the house resolution Friday, with the expectation it will be passed before the senate adjourns that day. Watson could have used the big stick on the opposition if he chose, as he had a strong majority with him. Since the tariff bill caused such a furore, however, there has been a marked willingness to go any lengths to preserve peace. Watson Gets Help Stymied in his efforts to get the measure through now, Watson worked five hours in conference for the agreement. The Muscle Shoals enthusiasts, Senators Heflin and Black of Alabama, were determined to stop the tax bill, if necessary, to get recognition for the pending Norris resolution, providing lease or government operation of the Tennessee river project. Senator Blaine (Indp.-Rep., Wis.) served notice he would not consent to take the measure up until after the tariff bill is passed next month. Senator Hawes (Dem., Mo.) was threatening to move consideration of the tax bill. All now have been more or less appeased, and little difficulty is anticipated. The matter could have been taken up today, but Senator Couzens (Rep., Mich.), is preparing an amendment to reduce the capital gains tax from 12% to 10 per cent. He desires to obtain additional information before he decides whether to press the emendment.
Treasury Against Move The treasury is opposed to the step, on the ground it might enlarge the tax reduction too greatly, thereby hazarding the condition of the budget. In the meantime, the senate is pushing ahead with the wool schedule of the tariff bill, making little progress. A vote is expected today on the proposal to increase the duty on wool rags. The house is ccfinpleting work on the interior department appropriation bill, which it expects to pass Wednesday, MAIL AID IS ASKED Bryson Requests Advertising Matter Be Withheld From Mail. Co-operation of business men in withholding advertising matter from the mail between Dec. 14 and 27 today was requested by Postmaster Robert H. Bryson, because of the Christmas mail rush. Because of the millions of Christmas greetings and parcels sent through the mail at this period, Bryson said, business men can confer a great favor upon the overburdened postoffice by mailing calendars, year books, trade announcements, price lists, catalogs, souvenirs and other classes of advertising matter either before or after the holiday rush starts.

OLD BLACK JOE SONG STILL IS POPULAR Mrs. George Primrose Carries on a Name in Minstrel Land Which Has Been Honored for Many Years. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN FOR sixty-five years the name of Primrose has been honored and loved all over this country. George Primrose in 1870 was creating clog dance steps and beginning to build up the name of Primrose as a minstrel leader. And now when the dancing feet of George will be heard no more, his wife, Mrs. George Primrose, is carrying on the name in a splendid fashion. It sure sounded good yesterday afternoon at the Lyric to see Johnny Heeley, 75 years old, do his “Old Black Joe” number in blackface. He was one of the originators of this number done in character. And even today, Heeley dances about and sings. He certainly has carried on
in a fine manner. Mrs. Primrose has associated with her four men in a quartet, all of whom have been associated with many of the big names when a minstrel show was a
big event in town. The Malloy twins do clog steps originated by Primrose. Mrs. Primrose has shown a fine sense of showmanship in getting up the act as she gives us the minstrel set at the close of the act. lin but she wins with her dancing. A mighty clever girl and a mighty good act. Jules Howard is a good comedy cop. His material is clean. His revue idea of his “nifty” sketch is done with no offense. This act has good comedy laughs. I am sorry that I arrived late at the theater and missed Hap Hazzard. The movie feature is “The Sap ” Now at the Lyric. tt tt tt Other theaters today offer: “The Mighty” at the Indiana, “Hearts in Exile” at the Apollo, “Flight” at the Circle, “Untamed” at the Palacs. “Gold Diggers of Broadway” at the Ohio, “Bowery Burlesque” at the Mutual, and movies at the Colonial.

Foam Fame Bu United Press PARIS, Dec. 10.—Women invaded another of men’s domains when Miss Helen Eshelman of Lancaster, Pa., won the world’s beer-drinking contest staged in an American bar in the downtown section of Paris. The competition consisted of drinking the contents of a twoquart beer glass in record time. Jack Frost of Harvard is on the books as the speed winner, 17 seconds, but Frost could not retain the beer, as Miss Eshelman did. Her time was 60 2-5 seconds, which means that she did not take the glass from her lips once.
