CITY IN PATH OF TWO RADIO PLANEBEACONS Pittsburgh-St. Louis, Chi-cago-Cincinnati Routes to Cross Here. Indianapolis soon will be located on two of several government radio range beacon airways, the automatic airplane guides, according to the department of commerce Air Commerce bulletin. Successful operation of a test line between New York and Omaha has resulted in decision of the department of ' mmerce to install several of these i.nes on the principal airways of the country. One would extend from Pittsburgh to St. Louis by way of Columbus, Indianapolis and Terre Haute. This line, It is planned, will continue by way of Kansas City, Wichita, Clovis, Albuquerque to the west coast. Another would extend from Cincinnati to Chicago by way of Indianapolis. One transmitting station would be located in Indianapolis for the two lines. These range beacons, provided by the government, have the advantage of serving pilots throughout the twenty-four-hour day, and, unlike lighted beacons, are not affected by "thick” weather. They serve as homing devices, making It passible to fly to the exact location of the beacon and thereby locating the landing field at which the beacon has been established. The device is operated by transmitting two radio code signals operating in lines a certain dis-

tance apart. For uniformity, the code letter A, (dot, dash) on one side, and N, (dash, dot) on the other side, has been selected. In the center, through earphones attached to a small radio receiving set, the two signals merge Into the letter TANARUS, (dash). As the plane veers from the exact center line of the course, the signal letter of the side to which the pilot has strayed becomes stronger. Range of the signals Is from seven to ten miles in width and 100 miles In length. Experience in operation of the New York-Omaha range has shown
that the letters A and N, transmitted at the rate of twenty-two signals a minute, are most effective. All beacons will use this combination. In order to identify a particular radio range, the signals are transmitted in groups in the same way that a clock strikes time. This, in addition to the station announcements by voice, made during the weather broadcasts every fifteen minutes, assures the pilot he is following the correct course. One transmitting station, on the New York-Omaha range, now is located at Goshen, Ind.

‘ Poiper! Extra! All About the Big Mail Pouch Robbery! Its a Bear’
By Science Service ' YELLOWSTONE PARK, Wyo., Dec. Yellowstone Park’s “holdup bears” have developed a new branch of the desperado business. One of them recently robbed the United States mails. Dorr Yeager, park naturalist, tells of the occurrence, which befell one of his colleagues, Dick White: “It seems that some days ago, Dick stopped at the Wes’ Thumb road camp for lunch. The season being closed, and the regular mail delivery having ceased, Dick obligingly was carrying a bundle of mail with him for the members of the different road crews around the loop. He left the mall in the car and, after enjoying a good meal, returned to continue his journey to Lake. "Imagine his surprise, however, to find the pack-
fathers and City Clerk-Elect Henry Goett. The new council will hold its first meeting at noon Jan. 6 to elect officers and organize. Ernest C. Ropkey, president of the Indianapolis Engraving Company, and widely known business man and civic leader, is being discussed as the choice for council president. The old council recently authorized a committee headed by Earl Buchanan to draft recommendations to the executive department embodying suggestions resulting
age of mail not in the car but between the paws of a black bear in a nearby tree. Bruin was examining the packet intently, sniffing and turning it over in an inquisitive manner. "Suddenly he began to tear at it and, disregarding the shouts and threats of the man below, continued until he had extracted a box from Its contents. The tree was shaken, clubs and threats were hurled but the bear, utterly unmindful of the commotion he was causing, tore open the box and feasted happily on the contents, which proved to be chocolates. “Having emptied the box thoroughly, licked his paws, and minutely inspected the remainder of the mail for further delicacies, he reluctantly dropped It Into the arms of the waiting man below, and with a contented grunt settled himself down on the limb until such time as his tormentor should retire.”

HANDS CITED AS DISEASEAGENTS Contaminated Daily, Says City Health Chief. “Hands off” of the mouth, nose and face was recommended by Dr. Herman G. Morgan, city health commissioner. In an article on the “role of the human hand in disease transmission,” which appears In the current issue of Hygeia, American Medical Association publication. "Without question, the hands and fingers many times daily are highly contaminated, having been in contact through necessity with almost every type of bacteria known to Infect and attack the human host,” Dr. Morgan declared. "A slight break in the skin usually Is needed to favor the growth of the organism, but some strains are of such virility that they attack the skin In the normal state.” Washing and cleaning of the face with soap and water and an occasional application of a mild astringent lotion is recommended by Dr. Morgan. It is generally supposed that Damascus, the chief city of Syria, is the oldest city in the world.
