KIDNAPER GETS 30-YEAR TERM; TO FILE APPEAL Detroit Man Still Protests Innocence; Sentenced to State Prison. 11 tt 1 nitrd Print DETROIT, Dec. s.—Still protesting his innocence, James Fernando, under sentence of from thirty to sixty years in Marquette state prison, today awaited his attorney’s appeal to the state supreme court for a new trial. Fernando was sentenced late Wednesday by Judge Charles L. Bartlett, after a jury of eight men and four women early Wednesday morning found him guilty of kidnaping 5-year-old Jackie Thompson and holding the boy until his father paid $25,000 ransom. Fernando claimed he acted as intermediary between the kidnapers and Thompson, only after Thompson had requested his aid. Police, however, claimed that $5,000 cash found in his possession, after he was arrested. w r as part of the ransom money Thompson had paid to a man known only as “Joe.” Authorities have no trace of the other kidnapers. Fernando heard his sentence with the calmness w-hich characterized his actions during his trial, but his wife, who was in the front spectators row with one of their three children, screamed and almost swooned.
