The W oman Charmer BY VIDA HURST
SYNOPSIS When Jacqueline Bordini, famous movie star, returns to the little town in which she had grown up. Howell Sheffield feels the stirrings of dissatisfaction. His father, a hard-working doctor, never had gotten rich, and Howell, studying medicine in preparation to follow his father s profession, wonders II he really wants to be a doctor. CHAPTER TWO FAIRFAX was both touched and and astonished at the generosity of Jacqueline Bordini. She purchased the place Howell’s fatliet had longed to buy. outfitted her mother with an entire wardrobe, from one of the most exclusive shops in Kansas City, and treated the town to a display of evening gowns, chiffon-lined coats, priceless furs and jewels a queen might envy. The invitations to the dance Mayor Fifield was giving at the hotel were accepted by Jacqueline for her family. When the occasion arrived old man Borden did not accompany his daughter, but her brother Raymond was there, smiled upon by girls who had not seen fit to speak to him before. And Mrs. Borden, uncomfortably self-conscious, but almost bursting with pride, folded her red, toil-worn hands, over a rhinestone encrusted evening gown. Howell’s mother, with her patient, dignified face and hands no amount of work could make less than patrician, appeared shabby beside her. His father had not come. He had a severe cold and announced his intention of going to bed at 8 o’clock, but before that time arrived had received a call from the country. "Don't go," begged Howell. “Send Dr. Mathewson.” "Matthewson has more than he can do now.” objected his father. "Maybe I can sleep late tomorrow.” He had buttoned up the old fur coat and gone, uncomplainingly as always, but Howell noticed how heavily he climbed into the Ford. "Father’s sick,” he said. His mother answered him quietly, but her eyes were full of tears. "Do you think I don’t know it?” “You didn’t say anything. Why didn’t you try to persuade him to stay at home?” “I knew better. He’d answer a call if he were on his death bed, and it only annoys him to have me argue about it. I made up my mind a good many years ago that I would never keep him from doing what he thinks in his duty.” “Even at the expense of his own health?” “Even so,” she replied. “It isn’t easy to be the wife of a great man, Howell, but it is very wonderful ” How she must love him, he thought. Where could a fellow find such devotion nowadays? The modern girl even in the throes of the most passionate attachment was alw’ays considering her own feelings. Theoretically, Howell know a great deal about women. Thanks to a wise father and his own scientific training, he had been well informed on matters pertaining to sex. For that reason or perhaps because both mind and body were as clean as an ice cold spring, he had had little actual experience. For several years he had considered himself in love with Eunice Fifield. Some day he hoped to marry her. At the university he was considered “attractive, but shy.” He was not the type which is irresistible to the average young woman. Most girls long for a sophisticated lover. Howell although more or less in demand on account of his position as captain of the football team, was not what is known as a "riot” with the ladies. The fact had not as yet caused him any pain. It was to do so for the first time on Christmas night. a a a WHEN he suggested calling for Eunice in the ancient taxi he usually employed, she said. “I can’t, Howell. We’re going to stop for the Bordens. You may come with us if you like." He refused, amused at the familiarity with which she now spoke of Jacqueline. But the smile on his lips died when she showed him her program. “I can only give you two. You see. I don’t want Raymond to feel

Headers who are afflicted with stomach torture, back-ache, rheumatism or weak kidneys, will find good news in a letter written by Mr. Geo. Ride. 426 No. Hickory St,. Kankakee. 111. He says: “For many years. I had serious trouble with my stomach and kidneys. I suffered terribly with cramps, gas and biliousness after meals. I could hardly hold anything on my stomach. I was dizzy, weak, short of breath, and very sallow. My kidneys were weak and disturbed me at night. I had terrible headaches, severe pains in my back, my joints were stiff and I was sore all over. I tried about everything, but kept getting worse until I started using Viuna. It quickly brought relief, and now I am feeling fine. I’ve had no gas or bilious attacks since I started the second bottle. My back has stopped aching. my head aches have vanished, and those terrible dizzy spells are things of the past. My tongue and complexion have cleared up, kidneys are just about normal again, and I am sleeping soundly, eating with a real appetite, and feeling better every day. I owe it all to Viuna.’’ Thousands of hopeless sufferers from kidney trouble, back-ache, stomach trouble and rheumatism, have been restored to perfect health by this wonder medicine. embarrassed, and I promised him every other one.” “I see,” Howell said grimly. "Now, please don’t be angry,” Eunice begged, laying a pleading hand upon his arm. "I thought of course you'd understand.” “I understand perfectly,’ he snapped and sauntered away, smiling again to cover the chagrin which at the moment seemed unbearable. Smoking gloomily in the lobby, he found himself the center of much good-natured bantering. "Whassa matter, Howell? Girl friend turn you down?” "Say, lissen, you going to let the weak-chinned baby cramp your style?” These and similar remarks drove Howell back to the dance floor. And as he passed, Jacqueline Bordoni, surrounded by a group of admirers, stretched forth a slender hand and presented him with the miracle of her smile. "What’s the matter with you, Howell? Why aren’t you speaking to your old friends?” He blushed as the crowd fell away from her. "I didn’t know if you’d remember me . . .” "Remember when I sat back of you in school for eight years? How are you, anyway?” He discovered that he was feeling suddenly and amazingly well. Jacqueline Bordoni had that effect on men. The dazzling radiance of her beauty was like a strange enchantment. causing everything else to blur and become vague. As if they were alone in the room. Howell found himself telling her of his plans for the future. "You’re going to be a doctor! But not here?” “I don’t know about that.” he said. "My father would like for me to, of course.” Jacqueline lowered her voice. "You’re too good-looking for this little town.” And suddenly for the first time in his life, Howell wondered if he were handsome. Just as well, perhaps, that he could not see himself as he appeared to the blue eyes of Jacqueline. He was of large athletic build, well over six feet, with dark brown hair, eager questoining eyes, and a clear, healthy skin, which was in itself an attraction. A few freckles decorated his nicely modeled nose. His mouth was rather boyishly unformed, but he possessed beautiful teeth and smile like his father’s. With no more than average conceit, he was pleased that his appearance had found favor in such a quarter! It was not little Jackie Why Suffer With Hemorrhoids? Borden, but Jacquelin Bordini who had spoken. Accustomed as she was to the masculine pulchritude of Hollywood she yet found him good-looking. Too good-looking for this little town. “Will you dance with me,” murmured Howell, emboldened by her amazing declaration. She shook her head with a fascinating hint of reproach. “My program was filled before I came. But if they play any extras . . a a a 'T'HEY didn't. It was his last opportunity for conversation with her He found, however, that the contact had boosted his stock with Eunice. She pressed his hand and asked, solicitously, if he were hurt. “Not at all,” Howell replied, and meant it. “I’m afraid you’re just saying that, Howell. You haven’t danced all'evening.” "I was disappointed, of course,” he answered, more gallantly. “But I can appreciate your position.” “That’s sweet of you. Raymond seems to be having a very good time. He’s a wonderful dancer.” “He would be,” Howell reflected. His eyes followed Jackie’s brother about the floor. Slimly, dapperly graceful, he cuddled even the disdainful Mildred Tewksbury* under his chin and made her look as if she liked it. Evidently Raymond shared his sister’s winning ways with the opposite sex. As if reading his thoughts, Eunice whispered, “Jacqueline has promised to send for Raymond after she returns from New York.” Was it envy or jealousy that caused Howell’s heart to contract? If Jacqueline took her brother to Hollywood and made a star of him, he would come back in a few months and carry away more honors. Perhaps even Eunice herself. Her attitude tonight had left Howell in little doubt as to what her reception in that case would be. Girls fell for “that stuff.” But, when he came to think of It, who hadn’t fallen for the charm and magnetism plus the romance and apparently unlimited funds, which belonged to Jacqueline Bordini? People were “kowtowing” to

her from every ride, both men and women. Girls like his sister, quiet, worthwhile girls, stayed at home and married some easy going farmer. . . . Not that there was anything wrong with Jim Wilcox. Howell liked him, but he knew Agnes’ life was far from exciting. ana T TIS mother had left early in the -*■ evening, Howell walked home in a fever of unrest. All his life he had been trained for an ideal. Since going away from home and hearing the stories of other men’s success, he had begun to doubt the wisdom of his father’s creed. These doubts had crystallized into conviction with the appearance of Jacqueline Bordini. Another semester in school, two years as interne in a St. Louis hospital, then they would expect him to come back and start a country practice. Any time he did! If he were going to be a doctor at least he'd begin in the city where a fellow had a chance. A chance for what? For big money! But if that were his bition why not go into something' else? Numberless other fields offered opportunities for making money quicker. The motion picture business for instance! Look at the fortune little Jackie Borden had acquired with no training whatever. And in four years’ time! If she could do it, why couldn’t he? Why couldn’t anybody with a reasonable amount of intelligence and good 100k5.... “It’s impossible, of course,” he thought with a pang at his heart as he saw the Ford waiting like a dejected old horse. He couldn’t let his father down after sacrificing so much. He pushed open the door which never was locked, and was surprised to find his mother, still dressed. “Your father has a chill,” she said. “I’m heating some water and he wants you to go right up and mix some powders for him.” Howell’s throat contracted at sight of the stalwart figure shivering under the heaped bedclothes. The doctor’s face was dark with fever. His eyes were glassy. “I’m pretty sick,” he said as Howell leaned over to take his hand. “You shouldn't have gone.” “I only did what any other doctor would do.” “Any other doctor?” “Not I,” thought Howell, counting the rapid pulse. What profession was this for a man to follow? Demanding constant sacrifice and in the end offering only death! For in less than three days’ time his father had died of pneumonia. (To Be Continued)
