SMALLPOX INCREASED IN STATE LAST MONTH .More Cases of Scarlet Fever Than in November, 1928. Smallpox increased more than 450 per cent in Indiana in November of this year, over the same month of last year, the state health department reported today. There was also an increase in scarlet fever cases, amounting to approximately 25 per cent. In the November just closed, the department was advised of 162 cases of smallpox, compared with thirty-four for November, 1923. Scarlet fever cases last month totaled 104, compared with eightfour a yenr ago in November. Reports from many sections of the state indicate that school officials are taking the most thorough action within several years in immunization measures. Vaccination has been ordered in numerous schools arid quarantines have been rigidly enforced. Despite the extraordinary prevalence of smallpox and scarlet fever, however, there has been no alarming ratio of fatality from the diseases.
