RADIO WOES OF CITY LAID TO POWER LINES Bare Wires, Seen on Many Circuits, Are Declared Trouble Source. BY’ JOHN T. HAWKINS, Time* Ralln Fditor After many weeks’ surveying of radio interference conditions in Indianapolis, it is the belief of this writer that fully 80 per cent of radio troubles in this city are caused by defects in power lines and equipment of the Indianapolis Power and Light Company. In some parts of Indianapolis the wiring done by the company apparently could be improved upon with little effort. Wires are strung in a seemingly hap-hazard manner in some localities that suggests undue haste to get the job done. Worn off insulation on power wires Is a common sight on many circuits. The bare wires can be seen running through tree limbs and at times down on the cross arms of the poles, constituting not only a series radio interference, but a fire hazard as well. This represents a loss to the power company in dollars and cents as well as good will. For instance, we will say that a house drop carrying 110 volts to some consumer’s house has been rubbed bare and is grounding on a tree limb or some other piece of wood in a like manner. If the wood Is damp, there will be a leakage current from the wire to ground that wiii run anywhere from a fraction of a watt up to much greater amounts. We will say t.he leakage is around five watts. Tills is no great amount in this one place, but multiply it by a possible hundred and the energy lass jumps to half a kilowatt. In a month’s time this represents a monetary loss of $21.60 to the power company, figuring energy cost at 6 cents a kilowatt hour. In a year this sum reaches a total of $259.20, figured on the same basis. These figures are purely speculative, but are probably much lower than actually would be found. Complete elimination of radio in- | terference caused by the power aud light company lines can be reached when the company co-operates in an earnest desire to help the radio listeners of Indianapolis.
