RECALL GUARDS TO BALK BREAK AT DANNEMQRA Possible Attempt to Carry Out Prison Delivery Plot Averted. Bu United Freen DANNEMORA, N. Y., Nov. 29. CUnton prison guards today were bemoaning the late which Thursday sent up a whisper, via the ‘.‘Grapevine Telegraph,” that the prisoners contemplated celebrating Thanksgiving day by making a break for freedom. On* hundred twenty-five guards had been released to pass the holiday with the families, when Warden Harry Kaiser heard a rumor of a Jail delivery plot. Kaiser, still with memories of the riot last summer in which three were killed, took no chances. He recalled his men and enlisted the aid of forty New York state troopers from the Malone barracks. All day Thursday, the full prison guard and the troopers kept vigil. Some patrolled the walls, with machine guns primed for action; some stood outside the walls, in strategic positions, with a biting north wind and several inches of snow to contend with, while a majority of the

6.0. P. SENATE RANKS DUE FOR SHAKEUFJUMOR McNary Hinted Successor to Watson as Party Floor Leader. BY PAUL R. MALLON United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Nov. 29.—A shakeup in the general staff of the Republican party in the senate was forecast today when letters were sent to all Republican senators asking if they were pleased with their present committee assignments. The letters were regarded as another way of askmg what the various Repulican senators desire, in preparation for a shift of jobs. They were sent out by Chairman McNary of the Republican committee on committees, who will call a meeting of his group next week to plan the reassignment of committee chairmanships important posts which enable their holders to direct legislation. Ostensibly, the changes were necessitated by the death of Chairman Warren of tire appropriations committee, the resignation of Chairman Edge of the intercollegiate canals committee, and the death of Senator
Burton, a member of the foreign relations committee. The passing of these three men from the senate involves a shift in many other posts. According to reliable information, the following important changes are scheduled: Senator Jones of Washington is to resign from the assistant leadership of the senate, to become chairman of the appropriations committee which directs all government appropriations. McNary is slated to be made assistant leader in place of Jones, in preparation for a further shift later on, when and if Republican Flror Leader Watson retires from leadership. Watson returned Wednesday from Florida, where he went for a rest, and announced shortly thereafter he had no intention of retiring. Should he change his mind, McNary would become leader. McNary was promoted for the leadership by the young guard recently during its threatened fight to overthrow Watson. 11l health, It ls e.-pected, may compel Watson to resign shortly. Senator Hiram Johnson of California, is to be made chairman of the commerce committee in place of Jones. These shifts will make way for more changes all the way down the line, the young guard gaining more recognition on the major committees than at present. jority when it took office Nov. 3, the Tarciieu government not only had held its strength but made significant gains as it moved to coruinue the foreign policies of the former premier, Aristide Briand, and to follow a conservative policy toward domestic problems. It had gained the support of the chamber's naval commission in its determined program of naval construction. Not until Thursday had the opposition which complicated the selection of the cabinet before Tardieu succeeeded, manifested itself in the manner of a strong union. As usual, the opposition demonstration centered on a minor question of pensions, which seems des-

tined to become the political football of the present unsettled situation. The left parties demanded an increase in the widows and maltreated war prisoners' pensions to 15,000.000 francs, instead of the 4.000'.000 francs increase planned. The chamber voted 314 to 267 to reject to the left’s demand, reducing to 47 the Tardieu government’s majority. Political experts already had noted the tightening of the lefts’ attitude and Thursday’s move against the cabinet was seen as a further step in the same direction, with the left not only aligning against the government, but winning popular symDathy by espousing higher pension*.
