BARE PEONAGE OF ILLITERATE IN OKLAHOMA Club-Rif'e Reign of Terror Uncovered in Torch Murder Probe. flu United Prem KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 20Land barons rule the wooded hills of northern Oklahoma with hickory switch and squirrel rifle and terrorize the poor and illiterate into peonage, the Kansas City JournalPost stated in a copyrighted article sketching the background of the "torch murder” of Connie Franklin, war veteran, who sought to reform the region. Franklin was mutilated and beaten, then burned to death in a wood in the secluded hill country near £t. James, Ark., last March. The grewsome crime was revealed by his fiancee, Tillie Ruminer, 16, who claimed she was attacked by the five men who murdered her sweetheart. Pear kept her lips sealed until a few days ago, she said, declaring her father had been beaten, threats had been made against her life and her 14-year-old brother had been held hostage to insure secrecy. Authorities began a systematic cleanup through the hills, arresting five suspects and learning the names of four others.
