MUTUAL VISITS SUGGESTED AS PEACEJINOER War Caused by Ignorance, Opinion of British Labor Official.
BY HENRY T. RUSSELL L'n Ite and Pr, Staff Correspondent (Copyright. 1829. by United Press) LONDON, Nov. 21.—War is a disgrace to humanity and only a world in utter ignorance of mutual problems would tolerate It for a minute. Tom Shaw, Labor member of parliament, and secretary of state for war for Great Britain, believes. From behind a huge desk in the war office in Whitehall, this kindly looking man. who is known affectionately as “Tom” by his friends, granted the United Press an interview. “Most misunderstandings, in fact T will go as far as to say, most wars, have come from the fact that people have not met each other sufficiently,” the minister said. “I am a great believer in frequent visits to one another. “You can argue with a man If you meet him personally to discuss your troubles, but you can not do this by correspondence. The wider the intercourse between the nations of the world, the better in my opinion. “I think, for instance, that it would be a very good thing for our ministers to get acquainted personally with their colleagues in other countries, especially In the United States. Asa matter of fact that is what actually occurs at Geneva, during the sessions of the League of Nations assembly. I should always welcome an opportunity to meet any of the American ministers.” Shaw hopes that he soon may find j time to visit the United States “to tell them something about Eng- ! land.” He preferred to what he | describes as “the fondness of Americans for informative lectures.” “Over there, you know,” he said, “they pay to listen. Here we have 1 to pay listeners.” Three Killed in Derailment Rm T’nitrd Pr<n* LONDON, Nov. 21.—Three persons w-ere killed and two injured seriously when a freight train was derailed near Bath.
