DOLL DRESSES TO KEEP PACE WITHFASHION Skirts Will Be Longer on Little Playmates This Season. Dolls will wear longer dresses this Christmas covering up the dimpled knees which showed under the bottom of their diminutive garments during the last few seasons. Few people realize how closely doll styles follow feminine fashions. But modes in doll world closely mirror those of real life. Bobbed hair, however,, still Is holding its own and most of the dolls which Santa will have in his pack this year will have bobbed tresses. During recent years many chars ter, or novelty, dolls have been brought out by American manufacturers. Frequently these are fashioned after characters in comic strips. Others are new creations of artists and sculptors. New Dolls Shown This season will see many new dolls of this kind. Such dolls give variety and are usually purchased by mothers for children already owning several dolls of more common design. However, the long popular mama doll continues in vogue. Enunciating the first word of childhood, “ma-ma,” it has for many years occupied a warm place in the hearts of American children. The growth of the American doll Industry to the point where 90 per cent of the dolls now sold in this country are made in America, had its beginning in the general adoption of the mama voice by domestic doll makers. Two other important American developments are the perfection of the unbreakable head and sleeping eyes. Two Sound Devices American dolls are equipped with two general types of sound-making devices —mama voices and crying voices. Dolls which say mama have a voice which emits a fairrly realistic two-syllable sound like ma-ma. Dolls with crying voices give forth a prolonged monotone crying sound. The difference con be discerned very easily by tilting the dolls forward to operate the voice. Mothers buying dolls for their children should test the vocal powers of their prospective puppet grandchildren, for sometimes the less expensive crying voice is substituted for the ma-ma voice.
