has been awarded to Dr. Thomas Mann of Germany, It was announced Tuesday. Dr. Thomas Mann is a well-known literary figure in Germany and some of his work has been published In this country. Among his better known books are “The Magic Mountain.” published in 1926, and “Budder.brooks,” published in 1903. Mann was born at Lubeck. Germany, on June 6, 1875, son of Senator Heinrich Mann and Julia Bruns Mann. In early life he was in the

insurance business, but deserted It for literature Just before the turn of the century. For a time he was editor of Simplicissimus of Munich. His first book of prominence was “The Little Mr. Friedemann,” published in 1898. He also wrote “Tristan,” “Florez” and “Death in Venice.” In addition he has written essays and biographies. His story on “Goethe and Tolstoy” is particularly well known. Among his essays is “Question and Answer.” He

is a resident of Munich, is married and has a large family. The Nobel prizes this year are worth $46,299 each. Old Brewery Effaced By United Preet ST. LOUTS, Nov. 15.—A pre-pro-hibition landmark was effaced here when fire destroyed the building which housed St. Louis’ first lager beer brewery. The house, said to have been built in 1816, was occupied by Adam Lemp, who in 1841, started the first lager beer brewery in the city.
