B.—The varied problems that face the printing industry will be discussed and remedial measures will be suggested at a conference for technical men in printing to open under the auspices of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers today at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh. The conference will be of international scope with prominent men in printing production in several foreign countries invited to attend. The prison ship La Martiniere, its holds filled with barred cages to contain its unhappy human cargo, sailed from the Island of Re Thursday on its semi-annual trip to Devil’s Island. La Martiniere sailed after 673 convicts had been locked aboard. In three weeks they will arrive at th dreaded French penal colony off th coast of French Guiana in Sout'. America, from which few prisonei ever have escaped. Most of thos condemned to Devil’s Island nevci see their homeland aga*n, workini at the labor of the island until die. Ten convicts escaped the fate of their fellows as the motley crew of murderers, counterfeiters, forgers and cut-throats were marshalled for the Journey. Were in Poor Health Medical examination of the ten showed that their health was precarious and that they would be unable to withstand the hardships of the penal colony. They were overjoyed at the prospect of life-time imprisonment on the fertile Island of Re, off this port in the Bay of Biscay. Their places were taken by ten other prisoners who otherwise would have awaited the next sailing of the ship early next year. Among those on this trip are Mestorino, the Italian “torch murderer,” whose wife has avowed her intention of sailing for French Guiana and staying there the remainder of her life, sharing her husband’s exile, though she will not be allowed to see him.
