VOLCANO TAKES TERRIFIC TOLL IN GUATEMALA Searchers Return With Tales of Horror: 300JLose Lives in Lava. Bv Cnitfi Pr*i GUATEMALA CITY, Nov. B.—The belching crater of Santa Maria volcano was quiet today, but from a devastated area twenty miles square about its base searchers returned with stories of horror that rivaled j the tales of the destruction of the ancient city of Pompeii. .Nearly a Week has passed since Santa Maria, quiet for twenty-seven years, broke forth in a three-day eruption which unoffcially is estimated to have taken a toll of at least 300 lives. Many more ]ie in crowded hospitals, burned and mangled by the falling stones and ' gushing molten lava of the Vesuvius of Guatemala. It was 9:30 p. m.. Saturday when 1 deep subterranean rumblings broke * j through the quiet of the coffee plan- , tations and interrupted the week-. end merrymaking of the plantation | settlers. Many of the settlers were asleep. Heat Kills Many Manv were victims of the intense heat ; others choked to death in the j poisonous fumes, the dust-laden at- ; m©sphere made worse by steam i from a light rain which fell over the molten lava. Humans, plants, and animals fared alike. Some who sought, to escape found tbeif way rut off In j every direction by the onrushing j lava and died in their tracks, their bodies incinerated. Hours afterwards, the first, few searching parties penetrated the stricken area. The scene was one of horror. Whole families were found In their huts, t.heir arms locked in embrace whrre they had j awaited certain death. ; Lava Covers Wreckage Other groups were found in the : j fceids. Some bodies were mangled. I j others were charred beyond idea- , I ttfication and buried in the lava j I Houses and sheds and the large j homes of the principal coffee plan- I tations were destroyed. The wreck- I age in places was covered by lava I and ashes. The only living thing in a settle- j ment of twenty-five people was n I tiny girl who was found in the I embrace of her dead mother. The 1 1 child was taken to a hospital and | laid beside scores of others who had | j escaped before they were trapped 11 by the encircling rivers of lava.
