BLOODY RIOTING IN PALESTINE IS LEAGUEWORRY Permanent Mandate Body Has Full Powers for Investigation. Bu United Prrtf GENEVA, Nov. 6.—Last summer's bloody riots in Palestine were scheduled for further investigation by the League of Nations when the latter’s permanent mandates commission convened here today. The commission, composed of eleven members represening states that have had special experience in alonial administration, met under ■he presidency of Marchess A Th odoli of Italy. As it has full authority to go into r °ry detail of the administration of mandated territories by the mandatory powers, it is expected that the commission will be far more searching in its inquiry into the Palestine situation that was the council and the assembly last September. The latter merely contented themselves with listening to the declarations made by Prime Minister MacDonald and Foreign Minister Henderson and accepting their assurances that the situation would be investigated fully. Gloria Swanson Back at Childhood School Desk
Btt United Prrtt CHICAGO. Nov. 6.—A little girl again, as thirty years faded before a tide of memories, Gloria Swanson went back to her seat in the second grade at the Hawthorne school Tuesday and made 100 in reading • spelling and problems, i Teacher, Miss Bertha L. Gloria her A B C’s, but with gray hair and spe c t acles now, sat at her desk on the rostrum to make things just as they were when Gloria was in the “second reader.” After the movie star, who now is. the wife of the Marquis Henri dc la Falaise de la Coudray, of Deau-' ville and Pari;, and has a little boy and girl about

the age she was thirty years ago, had gone to the blackboard and I spelled the words correctly and ! added her sums, she sat down at her old desk. She shared it with the happiest girl in all Chicago, Eleanor West. ergren, 7. Shyly the little girl confided a dream: “When I grow up, I want to be a movie actress and a countess with lots of clothes and go everywhere and—” “No, child, now is the happiest time in your life,” said Miss Swanson. , The countess was crying softly a few minutes later when she ac-
cepted a bouquet from her little friend. “Please, Miss Gloria, these are for you,” said Eleanor, as she proffered two wilted carnations, tied together with string. FORMER OFFICER HELD State Policemen, Suspended in 1927, Faces Liquor Charge. fit/ United Prcis MUNCIE, Ind., Nov. 6.—A charge of violating the liquor laws is on file here against Durward Sharp, Gaston, a former state motor policeman. Edson Long, 24, in an affidavit, charges that liquor found in his possession Sunday night belonged to Sharp and at the time of his arrest, he was only taking the officer home at the latter’s request. Long was arrested in the hallway of Sharp’s rooming house here by a Muncie detective, whose home is in the same building. Sharp was suspended from the state force in 1927 when he was said to have admitted buying liquor.

airplanes was announced in 1927 little was it expected that no serious competitors would be received for tests prior to the final week of the contest. There seems to have been a reluctance on the part of the designers, both foreign and domestic, to submit half-hatched ideas in this somewhat revolutionary aeronautical contest. It is on this account that entries have been withheld, and only at that late date is it possible to give a list of the competitors. Formal entry of twenty-seven vavious types of aircraft has been made during the last two years, but these entries merely filled out the form. All but less than a dozen at this time have withdrawn or have failed to complete their entry by submitting an air plane for test. Neither could it have been foreseen that the last two or three days of the competition would be fogbound, rainy days, with flying a practical impossibility, which has necessitated several of the entries being brought in by truck. At the close of the competition
the complete entry list ’ appears to comprise the Bumelli, the Com-mand-aire. the Cunningham-Hall, the Curtiss, the Fleet, Handley Page, the Leigh safety wing (which is a modified Brunner <fc Winkle bird), the Schroeder Wentworth and the Taylor. The Alfaro and the stock Brunner & Winkle bird were submitted ‘‘in person,” but were withdrawn. These airplanes, together with the
