MIDNIGHT ZERO HOUR IN LONDON LIQUOR PARLORS Night Clubs Are Closed and Speakeasies Feel Hand of Police Head. By rnited Prenn LONDON, Nov. I.—Americans won't believe it but Lord Byng, the new police commissioner, has made it nearly impossible to get a drink anywhere in London after midnight. Night club after night club has been closed in the west-end for failing to observe London’s drastic drink regulations. The old speakeasies that once served thirsty customers after the public houses and law-abiding night chibs quit pouring alcoholic libations are now nearly all closed. Ten respectable clubs remain. But it is useless, even with a fistful of dollar bills, to ask for more liquor after the midnight deadline is reached. In fact, no one, except for an occasional American, thinks of trying it. Asa result London is a deserted city ten minutes after midnight. True, some of the clubs stay open until one and two, but only a few stragglers, drinking lemonade or sipping coffee, remain to dance. Lord Byng's London is without night life. RAIL - CLERK PROMOTED C. D. LechHter is Named to Post at Pittsburgh Office. Appointment of C. D. Lechliter, formerly chief clerk to the divisional freight agent of the Indianapolis division, to milk freight agent at Pittsburgh, was Included in a list of Pennsylvania railroad changes announced today.

French Troops Quit Rhine
• " -Wf. _ ' _ &
It’s a peace-time retreat from the Rhine that is pictured here as French troops—last allied soldiers to occupy German territory— left for home under the terms of The Hague agreement. A departing French regiment is shown above marching to the railway station at Coblenz. General Goubeon, commander-in-chief of the French army of occupation, is seen below bidding farewell to his officers at poblenz as their evacuation began. British troops already had been withdrawn.

MYSTERY ROAD IS SINK HOLE FOBMATERIAL Mountain Stones Disappear From Sight Despite State Efforts. SARANAC LAKE. N. Y.. Nj>v. I. Fifty years of almost continuous effort on the part of Franklin county road builders have resulted in naught in the eight-mile stretch of highway known as the “sink hole” near here. Tons and tons of rock have been poured into the spot in hopes of forming a real foundation for a cement top and still the bed sinks out of sight. Only recently the entire stretch sank fifteen inches in one week. The piece of road lies on a principal state highway between Plattsburgh and this village, in the sector between Vermontville and Look Lake. Ground Apparently Solid It lies in a slight hollow and over apparently firm ground. Huge trees find no trouble in keeping their footing on either hand, but bowlders of any size and earth hauled from long distances sink out of sight with alarming rapidity. No explanation has satisfied the state engineers as to the cause. The terrain is‘slightly swampy, probably the bed of a former small Adirondack lake, but the size of the trees indicates that nothing of this sort has existed for more than 150 years. A small stream runs through one side of the spot and drains rapidly into the Saranac river a mile below. Mountain Stone Sank In putting through anew cement highway between Loon Lake and
Bloomingdale, contractors had to cut off the shoulders of several Adirondack mountains. The rock was hauled to the sink hole and placed scientifically, but sank rapidly. Several years ago a cow wandered into the spot and was caught. Before assistance could be obtained, the cow was too far down to save, and within a day disappeared from sight. Suggestions have been made to build a suspension bridge across the spot. It has been demonstrated that in the fifty years since fifst attempts were made to fill it in, enough money has been spent to erect a structure of this type.

OPINION DISCOURAGES UNORDEREO PACKAGES Merchants, Citizens Under No Obligations, Bureau Reports. If the postman leaves an unordered parcel of merchandise at your door there is no obligation to return or pay for It, according to legal opinions procured recently by the Indianapolis Better Business bureau, it announced today. The proper procedure, to discourage this type of selling, is to accept the package, and do nothing
with it until It is called for by the sender. Even if the parcel bears a stamped return address, there is no reason for returning it. A bill now pending before the legislature would govern acceptance and use of unor-
