U. S. EMBASSY PROTECTED BY BRITISHPOLICE Communists Rush Chancery in Protest Against Gastonia ‘Outrage.’ LONDON. Oct. 28—Scores of Communists were nursing bruised ne&ds today as the result of the hall hour battle royal, which some 300 of their number waged with the mounted police around the United States embassy Sunday. The Communists started with a demonstration in Trafalgar square, which was intended as a protest meeting against the conviction of the Gastcaia strikers. The demonstration, held at the base of Nelson's monument, was marked colorfully with banners and streamers bearing such inscriptions as "Down With Cap talistic Tyranny.’’ Heavy detachments of police surrounded the square, but saw no reapn to interfere with the Communists until the lerders decided to carry their protest against the Gastonia "outrage" to the United States embassy. When they arrived at the entrance of the chancery, they found their path barred by a cordon of mounted police. The police refused them permission to pass. Some of the Communist leaders called upon their followers to rush the police. The police answered by charging the demonstrators right and left, dispersing many who fled into the bystreets before the horses’ hoofs. Some of them, however, held their ground. When the police seized one Os their banners, a number of Communists tried to recover it and a melee ensued in which the police did not hesitate to use their clubs. To prevent any renewal of disorders. a heavy police guard remained in front of the United States embassy all night. BOYS' PAROLES ENDED Three Must Serve Farm Terms for Stealing. SOCIALISTS ARE BIG FACTOR IN FRENCHGRISIS’ Effort to Form Government May Be Futile in Face of Opposition. flv T'niirtl Preai PARIS, Oct. 28.—Leon Blum, the stormy and brilliant figure of the Left wing Socialists, became a decisive factor today in the solution of the political crisis, which began last' week with the fall of Aristide Briand’s cabinet in the chamber. Vigorously opposed during the last three years to Socialist participation in a government in which the Socialists of the party could not hold the majority of portfolios, Blum will utilize the opening of the Socialist congress today as an occasion for repledging the party to a program ol noncollaboration in any government it can not direct actually. That* Blum was committed definitely to such a step become apparent Sunday when he refused to accept a portfolio in the cabinet which the Radical-Socialist leader, Edouard Daladier, is striving to form on the basis of a union of the Left wing parties. If Blum can swing the Socialist congress to his position, the efforts of Daladier to form a government are likely to prove futile. Without the collaboration of the Socialists, Daladier will have to lean toward the center, where he is likely to meet with stiff resistance rather than support. Daladier’s real achievement Sunday consisted in inducing Aristide Briand to accept the portfolio of foreign affairs. Without Briand’s adhesion, Daladier would have found it impossible to form a cabinet that could endure, even though it did have the necessary Socialist backing.
