RED FLANNELS, WHISKY CALLED USELESS ITEMS State Heaith Expert Says Gridiron Bad Cold Bugaboo Gone. That quaint custom of taking a quart of liquor to a football game doesn't have the support of Dr. William F. King, secretary of the itate board of health. He declared today that liquor and heavy clothing are no longer conMdered necessary by health authorities to avoid colds in football stadiums or other out-of-door places. Petticoats are useless, he contends. "Few people catch colds at football games,” Dr. King said. “They catch them in crowded, stuffy places, such as banquet halls, their own homes, street cars, meetings and offices. “At a football game, a person's resistance to sickness is at the highest point* The only preventive measures necessary’ are keeping fairly dry and wearing sufficient clothes. “The old idea that colds were contracted in the open air and that going to a football game was the worst thing possible on a-bad day is bosh. “Extra red flannel underw’ear, petticoats and overcoats and a quart of whisky used to be taken along to a football game, but doctors now believe that extra clothing is unnecessary and legislators have made the whisky unnecessary.” Record Sheep Season By United Press COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.. Mr. Shore s state- : mert follows: t : “Konjola is a real ‘headliner’ among medicines. It is a medicine every one whose occupation causes him to travel from place to place and eat and sleep at irregular hours should carry with him. I have reason to be grateful to Konjola, for I do not believe I would be able to do my work today had it not been for this medicine. While playing in Chicago last fall I contracted the ‘3u,’ and it left me in a weakened condition. Neuritis developed in my shoulders and hands. Not only did this cause me much pain, but I flnallv had to lay off my act. as I could not Anger my musical instruments. I tried a number of treatments and medicines without getting much relief. •‘Coming to Indianapolis, I found that my mother had been taking Konjola’ and getting wonderful results. so I gave it a trial. To my amazement the condition quickly bee an to improve. I have taken eight bottles of this medicine and now do not have a trace of neuritis. Not only that, but I find that Konjola also is a wonderful conditioner. it is keeping me built up and feeling fine. I am very glad I found this medicine, as in the future I always will know what to do when I feel the need of a tonic.” This Is just another proof...if added proof were necessary.. .of the amazing merits of- Konjola. And what it has done for others it will do for you...for every one. The Konjola Mar. is at the Hook Dependable drug store, Illinois and Washington streets. ter way to become known in a hurry than an engagement to Clara Bow? However, the episode puts Clara far out front in the Hollywood engagement sweepstakes. Photoplay magazine’s correspondent has been checking up the standings in that perennial event and finds that Clara’s list of previous engagements now extends to five—Gilbert Roland, Robert Savage, Victor Fleming. Gary Cooper, and Harry Richman, in the order named. Which is something of ®record in feminine circles, even for Hollywood where minds are changed as often as make-up. Among the male romantic holdouts Ben Lyon possesses a history that surpasses even Clara’s. Young Mr. Lyon in six or eight years has been engaged to Barbara La Marr,

FOODS SERVE SAME PURPOSE AS SON'S RAYS Scientists Find Adults Can Get Vitamen D in Many Flavors. By Science Service CHICAGO, Oct. 25.—That the present day craving for sun-tan safeguards health as well as social standing has been further demonstrated by two Chicago scientists, Dr. Katharine Blunt and Miss Ruth Cowan, who are about to publish a book on the subject of ultraviolet light and vitamin D. If adults are deprived seriously of these two factors, they run the risk
of osteomalacia, a famine disease in which the bones lose calcium, soften and change in shape. Bow-legs, carious teeth, and peculiar gait develop in these people. If they played golf, swam outdoors, or even walked to work the condition could have been averted. But in these days of scientific wonders other methods of prevention and cure have been discovered, such as ultraviolet light therapy, codliver oil. and other irradiated foods. It is this light which is so important and a person can either irradiate himself or purchase food. In certain sections of India, among the women of the better class, osteomalacia is common because they are kept indoors most of the time and are heavily veiled when they do go out. The ultraviolet light never reaches them. Women of the lower class who are out all day in the open air are entirely free from the disease. Ultraviolt light is the key to the situation in the prevention or relief entirely by itself, other factors entering in. While vitamin D is im-
portant. a supply of calcium also is necessary for bones to grow properly and to remain strong and iieaffhy throughout life. Sunshine and cod-
