ACTOR REFUSES MILLION-COLLAR FILM CONTRACT Young Leslie Fenton Would Rather Be Carefree, Untrammeled. /;jj simct Special HOLLYWOOD, Cal., Oct. 25.—The Incredible has happened in Hollywood. Somebody has turned down a contract! Not a shining star of the movie firmament, either, but >ne of these promising young men oordering on stardom who, according to the best Hollywood conveniens, should have gulped, ' Thank ou, sir,” and signed. And it was a ;ontract that w'ould have meant a million dollars in an unbelievably ; lew years 1 When young Leslie Fenton, the about-to-be-star, sailed away for Spain on a slow freighter from San Pedro a few weeks ago, Hollywood wondered. Now that it knows the truth, it only gasps, “He's mad!” The story of how young Fenton tossed away a million dollars with a laugh is told in the current Pho- | toplay magazine. He explanis him- ; self that he simply didn’t want a million dollars. He'd rather be Leslie Fenton, roaming unattached over tV world, making his own romance and adventure as he goes, than a Hollywood star with a house, yacht, j motors, bills and a subservient obli-; gatton to turn out canned romance: to order. Millions Ruin Them "Do you realize what a million dollars can do to an actor?” he de- I mands. ‘’Look at the great actors . who came to Hollywood and now j exude complacency and smugness , Great actors who were, I mean , Thev were great when they were ; rebels. Now they are householders j with yachts and motors and swim- j ming pools. "How can you concentrate on your > work when your spare time is given j to writing checks and looking after ; business? I’m afraid of a million dollars." Whereupon the Hollywood mad- j man broke into quotation: “The measure of a man’s pleasure and greatness is what he can do without.”
Is Colorful Figure Fenton, who first attracted attention with his role of Lieutenant Moore in “What Price Glory,” and followed that up with stirring performances in “Paris Bound,” “The Dangerous Woman,” and “Broadway,” has been one of Hollywood’s most colorful figures with a reputation that combines the attributes of D’Artagnan and Villon in his offscreen life. Asa writer, he has published vivid short stories spasmodically. He also has written poetry, which he permits no one to read. His plan is to get an old boat in Spain and cruise along among the Mediterranean isles until “he feels his mental deck is cleared for fresh action,” says the Photoplay article. Then he may take a fling at the London stage. He may accept an offer for picture w*ork in Germany But more important to him is to play the role of Leslie Fenton, unattached and unimpeded by a million dollars, BABY ALARMS BURGLAR Prowler Moves Carriage and Flees as Infant Sets Up Cry. Bu United Prr HERKIMER, N. Y., Oct. 25.—The cries of a baby in a carriage frightened away a burglar in the act of entering the home of Elmer Sykes. In attempting to enter, the man moved a carriage standing near a window, and the baby began to cry.

LILY POND SUGGESTION PAYS FARMER PROFITS Hole Is Converted Into Pond and Yields Dividends. Bu United Brent RACINE, Wis., Oct. 25.—A chance suggestion made by a friend to Herman Erbe, Racine farmer, began a strange undertaking that has proved profitable to the farmer. A hole back of the farmhouse owned by Erbe appeared the logical site for a lily pond, the friend, a park employe, suggested. ‘‘This summer hundreds of tourists visited the ‘‘lily pond farm” to view’ the thousands of white and pink blossoms and to buy them. Although he sells them at only 50 cents a dozen, Erbe has received as much as $375 in a season from the sale of his lilies. TREASON CHARGES FILED Bu United Brett DNIEPROPETROVSK, U. S. S. R., Oct. 25—Two librarians in the central library here, Gstroverov and Betrinov, have been jailed on charges of counter-revolution for circulating anti-Soviet books. It appears that the librarians purposely placed Lenin’s works and other Communist books in the cellar and on inaccessible shelves, while displaying unfriendly volumes where they could be used without difficulty.
