EXTEND PENSION SYSTEM TO AID BRITISH WIDOWS Labor Government Hurdles First Obstacle in Home Field. B<> T piled Prrt LONDON. Oct 17.—The Labor government of Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald, Gushed with preliminary triumphs in foreign affairs, has hurdled the first obstacle on the home political field. Facing disquietude because of unsolved domestic problems, the government Wednesday exten<spd the pension system to include more than half a million additional windows. It is believed that, this measure, which merely Is an extention of the 1925 act passed by the Conservative government, will make a countrywide appeal and tend to minimize some of the recent bitter criticism of the government’s inertia in solving home problems. The announcement appears to have been timed with purpose. It probably will alleviate increasing discussion of the vital problem of unemployment, which still is to ,be solved, diverting comment, to other Issues for the present. This would give the government time to tackle the unemployment question, without being subjected constantly to bickering and public criticism. Some circles assert that the series of triumphs which Laborites have ecored in foreign fields is beginning to fade as a, stimulus to the public Imagination but it is considered likely that the pension measure will rekindle the fires of enthusiasm which already have swung many voters towards the MacDonald leadership. SHEARER LINK IS DENIED BY D. A. R. LEADER ■ National President Claims Society Stands Back of President. : Bp T nited Prem SPRINGFIELD. Mass, Oct. 17. Recent charges that the D. A. R. was used as a means of distributing : the propaganda of W.lliam B. Shearer, big navy advocate, have been denied by Mrs. Lowell Fletcher I Hobart of Cincinnati, president- | general of the national organization, f Addressing the Massachusetts chapter of the D. A. R. at its an- ; nual fall meeting Wednesday, Mrs. Hobart declared: “We never had j him speak for us and never used : any of his articles.” She denied forcefully that the national society had ever done anything to thwart the plans of President Hoover for peace or for any other reason. Mrs. Hobart admitted, however, that she had met Shearer, and thought that his ideas for defense “were fine.” She repudiated him of having any connection with the organization whatsoever. “The D. A. R. was the first society to indorse the Kellogg peace pact,” she said. “We stand back of the policies and the platform of President Hoover and we offered him Continental hall for the peace program meetings. Every loyal member of the D. A. R. hopes that he will be successful in his efforts for peace.” Builders estimate that the average workman, using both hands, can lift a weight of 236 pounds.

PRISON LABEL USE IS URGED Convict-Made Wares May Be Given Tags. . B it it * ri Prefix WASHINGTON. Oct. 17.—“ Made in prison” may rank along with “Made in America” or “Made in Germany” as a label on merchandise if a report made recently to commerce department by a committee of penologists, ma.u: ~ . i.crs and labor representatives is adopted. Impelled by objections of manufacturers to competition by prisonmade goods the commerce department asked the committee to study convict-manufactured merchandise and its effect on trade. Tagging prison-made products distinctly to identify them from these of “free” labor was recommended by the committee. Two of the members dissented from the A ort. Given such tags, merchants could sell “prison’ ’and ''‘free” "oods at different prices and the buyer could take his choice, the committee said. Basic Talks on Advertising Basic factors in making advertising successful were explained by Dr. Edward Haines Kistler, pastor of the Fairview Presbyterian church, at a luncheon of the Advertising Club in the Columbia Club today. He analyzed the mental and human reactions of advertising.
