LETTER OF GIRL PRISONER MAY SOLVE SLAYING Message to Ship Officer Held by Police in Mystery Death. Bv United Pres * NEW ORLEANS. Oct. 17.—Second Officer John McGouldrick, en route to New York on the steamer Creole, Is believed by authorities to possess the clew which may help nolve the mysterious death of Jack Kraft. A letter written to McGouldrick jy Miss lone Ord. the attractive irunet, who has been held for the rand jury linked the second officer .ith the case. Miss Ord w’rote the letter after he was taken into custody, intrustng it to newspaper men for mailog. Holds to Promise The letter, now in the hands of police, said: “Mac: Though I didn’t see you to say good-by and things look pretty black for me, my promise still holds. I haven’t changed my mind. Remain the same on the subject we talked of the last evening I saw you, and as soon as I am cleared of thi* I'll write you and we can make our plans. The thought of you is all that keeps me from going to pieces. Please write me as soon as you get this. I’ll live for that letter. I need it, so. Love ” Deputy sheriffs stopped the Creole at Pilot’s Point Wednesday rr.ght and asked Captain E. W. Sundstrom to surrender McGouldrick. The captain refused, explaining he dared not attempt the voyage to New York without his second officer. Two Stories Taiiy Bam Epstein, steward on the Creole, and Miss Ord told essentially the same story when arrested. They said they wer on the deck of the Creole with Kraft when he suddenly ran to the rail and leaped into the Mississippi river. Miss Ord was listed as Kraft’s traveling companion, and she explained they were taking the trip to write a ! series of articles on their adventures. The angle of the case that still is unexplained is a bullet found in Kraft's chest when the body was recovered. The coroner’s office said the bullet was the cause of death, but both Epstein and Miss Ord disclosed knowledge of a shot having been fired. Miss Ord refused to disclose the nature of her relations with McGouldrick. The girl has been hysterical since she learned police intercepted the letter.

AID ENEMY IN SELFDEFENSE G. 0. P. City Employes Give to Democrats’ Fund. The old adage that “politics makes strange bedfellows,” may explain a unique situation at city hall. Republican city employes are contributing to the Democratic campaign fund. Several department heads have received contributions from employes, including Republicans, who were retained when the Democratic administration took office. Mayor L. Ert Slack issued an edict that contributions would be voluntary and political activities must be confined to hours off duty, but many of the remaining Republicans “kicked in” rather than chance losing the favor of Democrats. “We make no distinction between Democrats and Republicans, and of course if they want to contribute—all right,” remarked one department head. Slack’s order prohibited assessment of a percentage of employes’ salaries. DR EINSTEIN ON AIR German Scientist Will Talk Monday Night. Bv United Press NEW YORK, Oct. 16.—Dr. Albert Einstein, noted German scientist, will speak to the American radio audience next Monday night, during the broadcast of the celebration at Dearborn, Mich., in honor of Thomas A. Edison. The propoynder of the celebrated Einstein theory of relativity will pay tribute to Edison, talking two minutes over the trans-Atlantic telephone system. His voice will be picked up by the National Broadcasting Company here and sent out over its nation-wide network. GROTTO WILL GET BID United States Group Scheduled for Council Session Invitation. United States Grottos will receive an official invitation to attend the supreme council session of its order here, June 17 to 19, tonight in a broadcast over radio station WFBM by the Indianapolis Sahara Grotto.
