an overhead highway nearly seven miles long through the western part of the city. The other project that is being prepared for future approval of the Chicago citizens calls for the construction of a ten-mile super-high- ! way of even larger proportions that | will lead traffic from the congested center of the city to an outlet in the | northwest corner. ! The Austin-Kinzie highway will be nearly five miles long and will average eighty feet in width. It will open up a part of the city, says Hugh E. Young, chief engineer for ) the Chicago plan commission, which has been the mast neglected of all : sections so far as traffic facilities go. Connection to these thirty-one streets will be by means of ramps so placed along the middle of the highway as to afford entering and leav- ! ing without hindrance to traffic. ! Where ramps are provided, each ten feet wide, the highway will be 109 ; feet wide. According to Young, this highi way will be wide enough to accom- ' modate nearly 4,500 vehicles an hour in both directions, or about 80,000 a day. This is far beyond ! the expectations of traffic demands as far off as 1950. If 80,000 owners use this highway daily, he calculates, each would | save about ten minutes’ running time to downtown Chicago.
