lis trying to do much more than primitive man ever had to do. Man in his most primitive state began in tropical regions where fruit and ■ vegetables were abundant. Only after he had clothed himself and provided himself with weapons in ! this type of environment did he venture into the cold and compara- : tively barren country, like that in which the American experimental - ! Ist has ventured today. Exposure to the cold nights of the Canadian fall will be one of McConnell's most serious hazards, in the opinion of Major Brewster, who points out that before the New Yorker obtains food he will have to provide himself against the cold. Fire will be his first necessity. To provide himself with this, according to reports, the adventurer has taken with him ash, cedar and oak hardwoods from which he hopes to be able to generate flame by friction Major Brewster has made by twirling one pointed stick of soft | wood, willow, into a slab of hard I ash To do this successfully, how-

ever, he had twine to wrap about the willow stick to give the requisite purchase to spin it fast enough to develop the heat essential for the production of flame. McConnell has no twine with him. Animal tendons would be the obvious substitute, but to condition them by the necessary drying, stretching and pounding would require at least two days. And before that, the Jasper guide adds, McConnell will have to find and kill a deer, bear or moose unless he is ! lucky enough to stumble on a porI cupine. McConnell also apparently I lacks wire, which he might have t used for snares. Major Brewster believes that McConnell will be too enfeebled by cold ! and too handicapped by his lacer--1 ated bare feet to bring his hunting to a profitable issue. If he does succeed in making a fire, he will need all his time to attend it. The District of Columbia contains more than 70,000 persons to the square miie.
