TARIFF WOULD BOOST PRICES IOJ’ER CENT Survey Shows Pending Bill Means Increased Cost of Many Articles. Ru Rrritirin-U'iirnril 7ietepnpe.r AlHan'e WASHINGTON. Oct. 10.—Imported goods In United States department stores must be marked up about 10 per cent in price if the pending tariff bill passes with It* present rate raises, according to an analysis by the National Retail Dry Goods Association. Philip Le Boutillier, tariff chairman of the association, made the analysts for Senator Simmons of North Carolina, ranking Democrat of the senate finance committee. The association is fighting the increases because its members are large importers of foreign goods. Selecting a representative list of thirteen articles in common use, Le Boutillier figured their sale price to the public, now totalling $355.54, must be marked up to $375.97 if the proposed rates go into effect. Among the articles are a kitchen clock, a baby carriage, leather gloves, silk goods, a small Wilton rug, and a leather bag. Practically all are of classes ot goods sold by all department stores and used in milions of homes Le Boutillier also figured the retail cost, if the ‘domestic value” basis of import duties for which American manufacturers are contending, were put into use at the present duty rates, as a total of $516.74, or almost double present prices. The senate has adopted an amendment directing the tariff commission to figure what rates would be necessary under the "domestic value” basis to approximate the present protection. This is thought to forecast another general tariff fight in two years or less, to put the domestic value basis into effect.
