EMMELMANTO AWAITVOTING Juicy Inspectorship Will Be Open If He Wins. Actiivties of Wayne Emmelman, county' bridge inspector, city Republican committee secretary and city clerk nominee, were choice conversational tid bits at the courthouse today. The county’s bridge building program consisting of two bridges and eight culverts, probably will continue without inspection by Emmelman. He obtained a leave of absence until Nov. 10 from his $214-a-month job. By that time Emmelman will know whether he was elected city clerk in the election five days previous to the termination of his “vacation.” If a successor is appointed the new “inspector” probably will be a worker in the George V. Coffin Republican organization, John E. Shearer, commissioner, said today. Shearer, however, refused to natfie any candidate for the post. He insisted the county’s bridges will “not go without inspection.” Several prominent Coffin henchmen are bidding for the “berth” and their luck depends on Emmelman’s success in the coming election. Former State Senator Better James J. Netterville, Anderson, former state senator from Madison ccimty, today was recovering from am operation he underwent in Methodist hospital Monday.

GOTHAM FEELS STRIKE RESULT IN POCKETBOOK Early Settlement Predicted as N. Y. Truckmen Remain Firm. Bu United Press .... NEW YORK, Oct. B.—Predictions of a settlement < ” the strike of market truckmen within the next twenty-four hours were heard today as the walkout spread to Harlem, Brooklyn and other nearby points and consumers began to feel the pinch in their pocketbtooks. The truckmen, who transport New York’s perishable foodstuffs from terminals to refrigerator warehouses and other distribution ponts, want an eight-hour day with time and a half for overtime. Perishables, such as fruits and vegetables, increased as much as 25 per cent in price in the outlying districts and an extreme shortage was threatened today in Yonkers, White Plains, Tarrytown and other Westchester points. An indication of a speedy settlement of the walkout was seen in the action of Acting Governor Herbert Lehman, who stepped, into the situation at noon Moncrey, but withdrew a few hours later, when the disputants seemed willing to settle their differences among themselves. Produce dealers bore the weight of accumulating and unmovable perishables. An additional $1,000,000 worth of produce rolled into freight terminals over night, threatening a possible total loss of well ever $6,000,000, One particular phase of the strike situation is that the employers of the truck drivers are in accord with the claims of their men, but, they maintain, they can not accede to
