—Aviation DIRIGIBLE SEEN AS FREIGHTER OF PEACE TIME - § Goodyear Official Says Zeps Do Not Compete With Airplanes. Possibilities of the ure of lighter than air craft, such as the Graf Zeppelin in promoting world peace and progress, were discussed by B. R. Jacobs, aeronautical division assistant manager, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Thursday at she Claypool before members of the Ohio valley shippers’ advisory board. “Those of us interested in lighter than air craft are interested, at as a method of destruction, a means of transporting hugh loads at comparatively high speeds,’’ he said. Jacobs outlined briefly transportation from the days of early man, when the small branches of a tree limb served as “transportation,” down to the present. U. S. Can Lead World “The United States has the opportunity to lead the world in lighter than air craft, just as it has gained leadership in airplane transportation,” he said. There are three types of lighter than air craft, he pointed out, rigid, semi-rigid and non-rigid. The nonrigid type has a low carrying capacity. The semi-rigid type, with a metal keel, has greatly increased load capacity, but the rigid type, with its duralumin metal segments and ring girders, giving great rigidity, is practical for carrying huge loads at speeds of 75 to 80 miles an hour. He compared various rigid ships, from the Los Angeles, naval dirigible, with a lift of 153.000 pounds, to the two huge ships being built by the Goodyear company for the United States navy, which will have 403,000 pounds gross lift. Excel Graf Zeppelin These leviathans of the air, he said, will be able to cruise half-way j round the world without stopping J for fuel. Each of them is threefourths larger than the Graf Zeppelin. There Is no jealousy between those interested in airplanes and airships, he said. There must be simultaneous development of both, as they have entirely separate fields, the airplane’s field being the carrying of relatively light loads at high speed. Jacobs urged recognition of the airplane as a definite, vital part of ; existence today. Safety Record Set Carrying 20.117 passengers without a single fatality and flying a j total of 832,520 miles, the operations j of Curtiss Flying Service in forty | centers reached a record peak in ; August, according to H. Weir Cook, j general manager of the Indiana Curtiss Company. During the month more than 1,000 Curtiss students were in training at the various Curtiss schools, flying more than 5,000 hours, dual and j solo, likewise without a single ; fatality. Os the 20,117 passengers flown in August, more than 1,000 were business executives who made special trips by air to save valuable business time. Cook said. This does not include business men who flew simply because they preferred air traveL This record, Cook said, reflects the result of uniform national standards of operation, and Curtiss efforts, whether in pilot training or passenger traffic, to exceed, when possible, even the stringent regulations of the department of commerce. Fish Travel in Plane Bv United Press AUGUSTA, Me., Oct. 4.—Maine has produced fish that fly. No, It’s not evolution. The state fish and game department recently transferred 1,000 flngerling trout and salmon by airplane from hatcheries at Moosehead lake to ponds fifty miles northward.
