HERO OF OLD ► WEST VICTIM OF BANDIT GUN Rodeo (Cal.) Constable Pays With Life in Armed Defense of Bank. By T'nitrd prrf* RODEO. Cal., Sept. 26—A true descendant of California's noted Vigilantes forfeited his life in a main strict gun battle here today. Rodeo’s history, replete with western romance, gained another chapter when bandits robbed the town's bank of $25,000 and killed Constable ■Arthur McDonald. The robbers 'escaped with their loot, although one of them was wounded by the officer. A dozen groups of men were patrolling all thoroughfares of the region tonight. Shortly after the Rodeo branch of the Bank of Pinole opened today, an automobile stopped in front of it. A man about 40 stepped 'out, leaving a younger confederate at the wheel. McDonald was guarding the $25.000 pay roll of an oil company inside the bank. “Hold up your hands,” the stranger demanded. The veteran officer answered by lifting his shotgun. Simultaneously the charges from McDonald's gun and the bandit’s revolver exploded. Together they slumped to the floor. But, as the bandit fell, he reached out and grasped the money. He was able to crawl outside, where his accomplice lifted him into the car and drove away. McDonald died in a Richmond hospital. The arrest of more than half the bandits and housebreakers in London during the last twelve months have been immediately due to the use of wireless.
