SENATE PROBE , IS ORDERED ON BLOW AT LABOR Philadelphia Injunction to Curb Clothing Union Is Denounced. B'l Srrippg./f i,:i nr<l \iKSpitnrr Alttnnrs WASHINGTON. Sept. 24—Preliminary hearings will be held this week on Senator LaFollette’s resolution to investigate the recent injunctions issued in Philadelphia against the Amalgamated Clothing Workers by Federal Judge Kirkpatrick. LaFollette and others have denounced the injunction as among the worst ever issued against union labor. Senator Norris of Nebraska, chairman of the senate judiciary committee, to which the resolution was referred, appointed Senators Blaine Bf Wisconsin, Walsh of Montana, pand himself to consider the resolution and report back to the full committee. This is the same committee which drew up the bill to restrict Issuance of anti-labor injunctions, still pending. Norris said witnesses from both aides of the Philadelphia controversy would be called to testify before the subcommittee some time this week. "We intend, of course, to take only sufficient testimony to decide whether the resolution should be reported favorably,” he said. Norris said he had not yet decided what Philadelphians to call as witnesses. “Probably we shall have only me from each side of the controversy,” he said. “A complete investigation, of course, would not be held until or unless the senate adopted the LaFollette resolution.”

ICE WASTE IS HUGE Figures Show Indianapolis Loses 96,000 Tons Yearly. Indianapolis poured 96,000 tons of melted ice down the drain pipes of its refrigerators during the last year without its housewives getting any good from it. This amazing figure, arrived at by the Leonard Institute of Food Preservation, is the annual ice waste in Indianapolis due to faulty refrigeration. It is based on a survey of ice meltage in Rochester, N. Y„ showing a per capita waste of 500 pounds of ice. The American public literally is pouring water into a sieve, the waters being in the form of ice and the sieve being the leaky, uninsulated refrigeration that does not keep out hot air, says the institute. Appointed as Physical Director Miss Mary Helen Wood of Norwood, 0., graduate of the Indianapolis Normal college in 1927, has been appointed physical director of Mt. St, Joseph college at Cincinnati.
