WELL ROOFED BUILDING SEEN AS INVESTMENT Brings Return in Protection, Resale Value, Declares Smithers Cos. Head. . ing a building well roofed not an expense, but an investment, bringing returns in protection and resale value, according to Joseph E. Mattingly, president of the Henry C. Smithers Roofing Company, 430 South Meridian street. The Smithers company reports a steady Increase in business and consistent demand for residential and commercial roofing during the past eight months of this year. The company applies asphalt, rag and asbestos felt roofs, as well as asphalt and asbestos shingle roofs. The asphalt and asbestos shinglo roofs are adaptable to residences and are quite economical for moderate priced homes. Demand Heavy There is a. heavy demand for slate and tile roofing on the more pretentious homes and public buildings, Mattingly said. Many of the residences and public buildings constructed here and in other cities of the state have had this type of roof construction. “There was a time when the roof was looked upon as nothing more than a shelter from the elements, but today it is regarded as one of the first essentials of good achitectural style,” Mattingly said. “The roof of a home seldom escapes critical observation, the importance of making it attractive being quite apparent.” Completed Several The Smithers company has completed a number of residences, including those of Thomas D. Taggart at French Lick Springs, Henry C. Ulen at. Lebanon, Frederick T. Holliday at Crow's Nest and Perry O’Neal in Shooters Hill. Tile and slate roofing and all copper and sheet metal work on these residences was done by the firm. Other recent jobs, completed by the company, include the Aladdin factory buildings at Alexandria, Ind., Zenite Metal Company plant, and the Curtiss Flying Service hangar. BRISK FALL BUILDING ACTIVITY PREDICTED Thirty-three Permits Are Issued for House Structures. Permits for new residences issued by the city building commissioner tills week indicated considerable fall activity, according to a report of the Indianapolis Real Estate Board to£ay. . Thirty-three house permits were issued, totaling $147,700.. Fermit for a building to be erected at College avenue by the College Canal Realty Company, and another for an addition to the plant of the Capitol Machine Company at 2801 Roosevelt avenue, were issued. These projects, to cost $15,POO, bring the total to $162,700.

FLY IT YOURSELF SERVICE STARTED
System at Kansas City Is Pioneering Business Adventure in Air. The pioneering spirit of the middle west is not dead. Recent press dispatches from Kansas City tell of the inauguration by the Saunders Drive-It-Yourself system of a Fly-It-Yourself service. This is a pioneer business adventure into the air, and to the middle west goes the credit of the first Fly-It-Yourself service. The Saunders Drive-It-Yourself system is living up to the best covered wagon traditions of the middle west. This company was the pioneer of the Drive-It-Yourself field, starting in Omaha in 1916 with one Ford car. It inaugrated the first Drive-It-Yourself service in the country, and has grown from one car in one branch in 1916 to eighty branches, located in fifty-four cities, operating 2,000 automobiles, and selling annually twenty million Drive-It-Yourself miles. 100 Planes Bought The Saunders Drive-It-Youreself system is now pioneering with airplanes through a Fly-It-Yourself service. A hangar has been leased at Fairfax airport, Kansas City, and 100 airplanes purchased. This Fly-It-Yourself service will be extended as
CITY REALTY MART SLOW THIS WEEK
Outstanding Deal Exchange of Properties Valued at Nearly $40,000. The Indianapolis realty market was somewhat slow this week, according to a survey by the Indianapolis Real Estate Board. Outstanding among deals negotiated this week was an exchange involving properties valued at approximately $40,000. In the exchange, A. H. Franke of the State Savings and Trust Company acquired title to forty-five acres in Hamilton county, one mile west of Carmel. The property was sold bv the General Investment Company, which accepted in trade six local properties. These consisted of a frame bungalow at 731 North Audubon road, double residences at 2016-18 Adams street and 414-16 West Twenty-fifth street, and three lots in Lagoon park. The exchange was negotiated by W. A. Wicker. Wicker also made another trade. In which the General Investment Company bought, from Burgess Roberts, of Rockville. a four-room house and one acre of ground south of Carmel on state Road 31, Roberts accepting in exchange, a lot in Carmel. Another lot in Carmel was sold by J. H. Davis to Charles Baldwin through Wicker and A. R. Scott. Two Bungalows Sold Two bungalow residences were sold by Michael A. Quinn. One, at 1332 North Riley avenue was purchased by Earl L. McCarty. The other, at 1301 North Riley avenue was sold by Alma A. Hoeltke to I. -N. McEllhenney. Sale of six houses, amounting to more than $30,000, was announced by Robert Allison, manager of the Allison Realty Company. Two of the homes, sold for the Grinslade Construction Company, builders, were located in the company’s Thompson Park addition at Fifty-ninth and Carrolton

rapidly as possible to all of the larger cities, especially those which have shown the covered wagon spirit along aviation lines. Some thirty odd cities throughout the country already have requested this Fly It Yourself service. The economic justification for a Fly-It-Yourself sendee is apparent. Airplanes are expensive. The average business man or company has, at the present time, only an occasional need for a plane. It would seem good business, therefore, that, instead of tying up considerable investment in an airplane, a great many business men would rent their planes o na Fly-It-Yourself basis, when, as, and if, needed. Competent pilots will be available where needed. Seen Step Forward The introduction by the Saunders Fly-It-Yourself system for a Fly-It-Yourself service marks a forward step in the development of aviation, and has given favorable comment by the newspapers throughout the country. The same pioneering spirit with which the Saunders system put across Drive It Yourself also will put across Fly-It-Yourself.” The covered wagon spirit of the middle west is not dead. The Saunders system is represented in Indianapolis with two local branches, one at 311 North Pennsylvania street, and the other at 39 Kentucky avenue.
streets. One of them, a five-room, English type, brick veneer home, at 5915 Forest Lane, was purchased by Charles J. Austemiller for $7,350. The other, a fiveroom, brick veneer bungalow at 1016 East Fifty-ninth stret, was bought by Kenneth Tucker for $7,200. A five-room, frame bungalow at 2640 Allen avenue. In the Garfield park district, was sold by the Allison company to Clara Steffen. The price was *5,500. Another home at 1420 Gimber street was sold by Mr. Allison for the Fletcher Avenue Saving & Loan Association to John Paterman. Each Cost $4,950 The Allison company also sold two homes built by C. O. Grinsladte. One at 4012 East Eleventh stret. Is being completed for Claude Davis. The other, at 4003 East Eleventh street, was bought by Carl and Florence GrayblH. Both ware five-room, frame bungalows. Price of each was $4,950. Sale by the firm of Bridges * Graves of a building job on East Raymond street near the Michigan road was announced by William L. Bridges, president of the firm. The home, to be built for Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wikoff, will be a six-room, English type bungalow, with slate Toof, two-car garage and steal sash throughout. E. L. Cothrell of the E. L. Cothrell Company reported business during the summer season as good, with prospects of some improvement this fall. Within the last few months, the company has sold thirty-two homes in its Creston addition on the Rockville road Just west of the city limits. This leaves only thirteen lots in the fourth setcion of the addition, opened this summer, unsold. Activity in the addition has been increased with the completition of Creston drive, a half-mile concrete boulevard, running through the addition and connecting at each end with the Rockville road. Cothrell also announced his company has sold nine homes, most of them brick veneer bungalows, built this season on Shannon avenue, just north of East Tenth street.
