CREDENCE GIVEN RUSS CLAIM OF RESTORING LIFE Journalist Asserts He Saw Dog Brought Back From His Doom. Bn fin m* Sseeini NEW YORK, Sept. 13—Further corroboration comes from abroad of the amazing experiment performed by Russian scientists, whereby a dog's head, severed from the body, was brought back to life and made to function normally by an artificial heart. First news of the experiment was received in this country with wonder and some incredulity. Rebecca West, noted English novelist and critic, writing in the September issue of The Bookman, recounts a conversation with a journalist who witnessed the experiment in Paris. “He told me he had been over to the Institute of Science in Paris to see the demonstration of an experiment by one of Pavlov’s pupils,” writes Miss West. “A wolfhound had been brought in and chloroformed. Its head was cut off and put on a plate, where it remained 1

Refuses to Execute Pal; Confesses Self Guilty
By United Press HAVANA, Sept. 13.—A1l Cuba was stirred today by the dramatic refusal of the public executioned to put to death a condemned man on the grounds he himself had committed the crime. "I alone committed the crime and I alone should be the sufferer,” the executioner said. The executioner is Francisco Pineda. The condemned man is Zoilo Dodriguez. The date for the execution has not been fixed by the courts. Both Pineda and the condemned man were implicated m a murder, in 1913, of a 62-
for half an hour. Then the large veins of the head were joined by tubing to an artificial heart in a tank. “Lo, the head that had been dead lived again. Offered food, it accepted it. Offered an acid, it rejected it. Its eyes, its jaws, its tongue, its ears, made just such patterns of communication as it had done in life. And when the tubes were cut, it died a second time.” The most interesting part of Miss West's conversation in The Book-
year-old woman. Rodriguez, arrested in Tampa. Fla., recently, was sentenced to be executed. An iron ring is placed about the condemned man's neck and a steel bolt, pressed through a hole in the ring, snaps the victim’s spinal cord. For his part in the affair Pineda was appointed “minister of executions.” At first the executioner said he would put his former companion to death. Today he suffered a change of heart and announced he, and not Rodriguez, had committed the crime and was solely responsible for it.
mart, however, was the conviction expressed by the journalist that some of the foreign scientific students, in the interests of science, would offer themselves for the experiment. When she remarked that the experiment could have no real psychological interest until it is done on a human subject, who can speak, her informant replied: “You can be sure that those Russians have thought of that. There will be one at least of those men making up his mind to offer himself for the experiment."
